You need to make sure that it is in park then make sure to try and put in out of 4 wheel drive, if nothing then put it in ( neutral ). and do the same thing the best thing that I do is call a couple of mechanics and there will tell you as much as you can. Most of the time they will fix it for you in a snap and you will tell your self wow I can't believe I did not thank about that. Nikki2913  good luck I hope it helps sorry I am the only one that has responded to you.

go underneath and check all pivot points and slides for rust and seized. Check for dried mud build up if you have been off road. Clean the area around the levers and lubricate all moving points.

2004 Buick Rainier four wheel is stuck in AWD drive all the time .

All wheel drive is just that-- All wheel drive-- not to be confused with 4 wheel drive . The difference is with AWD there is a 3rd diff in the transmission that allows the front and rear wheels to operate at different road speeds . When 4wd is selected that 3rd diff is locked and so both front and rear wheels drive at the same speed regardless of ups and downs in the road surface . This results in a torque wind up in the drive train and places load on "U" joints --splines --CV joints and gear teeth . The grinding on turning corners will be the CV joints trying not to flex because of the torque wind up . How to prevent this problem=== Do not use 4wd on hard road surfaces === as the tyres cannot slip to relieve the torque Restrict the 4wd use to snow , mud and loose surfaces TO fix the problem unselect 4wd drive and reverse several yards to release the pressure in the drive train and the actuator has a chance to pull the gear out of lock up. If that doesn't work check that the actuator is actually working

2003 Kia Sorento 4 wheel drive will not disengage

Best way to fix it is to lift one side of the car using a jack. Get front and back wheels off the ground. Then put the car into neutral and out of four wheel drive into 2 wheel high ratio. Start the car and rev it up to about 3000rpm for a short while. It should then release the four wheel drive.
It gets stuck mainly because of transmission wind up. Ie tension in the transmission.

Stuck in 4Lo

Put truck in park, put into four wheel hi, then throw truck in reverse and drive backwards 200 feet, then drive foward. if dont work, you could try to leave truck in park and 4 wheel hi, then disconnect battery for 15 minutes then reconnect battery. doing this will reset the computer.

Have you checked the switch on the transfer case? Those switches tend to go bad and primarily operated the 4 wheel Hi.

Had the same problem. Easy fix. Grasp the plastic dashboard piece that goes around the instrument cluster and 4 wheel drive switch and pull off. Remove the 4 wheel drive switch. Unplug wiring harness from back of switch. use small screwdriver and carefully bend all metal tabs in back of switch slightly to one side. Re-install harness and switch back into dash. Should work fine, it just was not getting a connection. Worked great for me.
