Why does the "check engine" come on after traveling 2 miles. Turn off motor & turn motorback on & 3 miles that same signal comes on again.

I was told it could be as simple as a real dirty air cleaner and hampering performance at idle
I was also told it could be an O2 sensor(oxygen sensor)
It could also be that EGR thing.

Only way to know for sure would be to run a diagnostic on the system. If the light would stay on that would be great in a perfect world.

I am having a similar problem but sometimes it occurs even at road-speed during small hill climbs and then goes out.

The EGR channels on the intake manifold are probably clogged. Aluminum is real bad about clogging up with carbon. You'll have to take the throttle body off and the elbow going down to the intake. The EGR channels will be right there just scrape and vaccum out the channels. Just be careful not to drop anything down into the intake, that would be very bad. After I did this the check engine light never can on again.

The "Check Engine" light, if that's what you're referring to, should only illuminate if the ECU detects an engine or trans problem. When you first turn the key on, the light will illuminate, because the ECU runs a preliminary test on its systems. It should then go out . If the light stays on, then you'll have to get the system scanned for diagnostics codes. Hope this helps.

I have a lincoln towncar 1994 4.6L v8....................where exactly is the heater control valve located on the car. I have looked eveywhere on the firewall didnt see a thing.

Might not be on the firewall, but if you trace the upper heater hose from the firewall to the engine you should see it, unless perhaps a previous owner had it removed. It looks something like this:

Transmission 1994 lincoln towncar- 89000 miles

I would not conclude you have a trans problem,as some other issue maybe be confusing the shift stratagy.
The temperature issues and time driven are the key here.
I would check for stored codes first.
Then go over the basics-Spark Plugs,Ignition,Egr Valve,Vacuum Leaks,MAF Sensor and so forth.
Clean up the engine driveablity issues first.

Becareful when considering changing the trans fluid. That will not fix anything and may cause it to slip more,if you get to that point in your testing

The time parked is not a concern ,as I feel these issues where there before.
If the engine is not running correctly ,you will get just what you discribed, with the shifting up and down

If your clock spring is buggered your horn wont be working either nor will your cruise control controls.
