Hello and welcome to Fixya
Due to the complex nature of the electronic control systems of this car your problem will likely need the attention of a dealer. There may be a dealer TSB (service letter) that addresses this and a quick fix. Until diagnostics are run and the dealer information center used to look up the problem by symptom solution is elusive.

What does ESP light mean on a cls 500 Mercedes Benz

The ESP system means the Electronic Stability Program. If the ESP lights on the dashboard permanently the ESP system is faulty.
You should access the ESP Electronic Control Unit (ECU) memory for pull out all DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes), using diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car. Then you will be full informed about bad pieces (e.g.: brake pedal switch, front right wheel abs sensor interrupted, ...). After bad pieces replacement you will be able to erase all faults memored by ESP ECU, in other words reset the ESP system and turn off the warning lamp on dashboard.

Check & replace if necessary the brake pedal switch placed above pedals on the support.

If the problem still occurs you should access the ABS & ESP ECU (Electronic Control Unit) using diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car, in order to pull out all DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) memored.
Then you will be able to replace bad piece(s) and fix the problem by erasing all DTC stocked inside ABS & ESP ECU, and reset it.

Mercedes

An engine control unit (ECU) is an electronic control unit which controls various aspects of an internal combustion engine's operation. The simplest ECUs control only the quantity of fuel injected into each cylinder each engine cycle. More advanced ECUs found on most modern cars also control the ignition timing, variable valve timing (VVT), the level of boost maintained by the turbocharger (in turbocharged cars), and other peripherals.
ECUs determine the quantity of fuel, ignition timing and other parameters by monitoring the engine through sensors. These can include, MAP sensor, throttle position sensor, air temperature sensor, oxygen sensor and many others. Often this monitoring and control is done using a control loop (such as a PID controller).
Before ECUs, most engine parameters were fixed. The quantity of fuel per cylinder per engine cycle was determined by a carburetor or injector pump.

ECU doesnt get reset its fixed. If your trying to clear a CEL you need a reader. You can make one by going to benzworld.org and looking up homemade reader. The reader can clear codes also.
