Question about 1988 Chevrolet K1500
Going down the road and quit pulling. Now it will go in park but will not go in reverse or drive. It will not go in low or high gear. The linkage is moving but wil not go in any gear at all.
If it doesn't feel like it is engaging in the gears, but it will go into park, there is a chance that it is low on fluid, typically though, if this were the case, you would know it before you took off. Is the vehicle leaking any fluid? Other wise it is possible that the linkage is damaged. Again though, this would have been noticeable before take off and if you were driving when it quit pulling, it likely would have not gone into park. Other than it being related to low fluid, it would likely have something to do with the shaft (which currently the name of it escapes me) that goes from your motor to your tranny. The tranny you have is likely a 700R4 if has overdrive and if it is the original one, depending on the mileage of the vehicle it may need to be rebuilt. I have a 91' and its tranny was rebuilt at like 140XXX miles or so. It depends on the maintenance a driver though.

It appears to me that the transmission is slipping. It may be as simple as low fluid or it may be burned up. Check the fluid level, and note the color and smell. Good fluid will be red in color, if it's bad it'll be very dark and have a burnt smell. The internal clutches and band friction materials can eventually wear out and the trans will need to be rebuilt or replaced. I hope this helps
