I hooked up a cheap diagnostic tool and got missfire at #5 cyl. Cycled the key and got 12-43-55. I know 55 means its done but can't find 12 or 43. I've done plugs, wires, cap & rotor, compression test, and 3 tanks of premium with 2 cans of seafoam each tank and the light just came on again. I haven't checked the injector yet but I'd like to know what the code means first. The truck has 293,000 on it but motor and ****** have about 65,000. Any help is greatly appreciated. Last thing, the miss isn't always there, sometimes it runs perfect?

Aloha We have just replaced all of what you have replaced, plus water pump, fuel pump, pcv valve and 02 sensor. Took it to mechanic today we had misfire on 1,2,6,7. Mechanic said that the 99 dodge is known for bad computers, he checked ours and works great turns out that it was the coil. Ours was jumping 1/4 inch and had a orange/yellow spark. it is supposed to have a 1 inch spark and be blue. This has solved our problems after 527 dollars later.
Check the coil!

Now please forgive me here as i do get amolished by other mechanics for trying to answer questions on american vehicles when iam in spain no iam not going to wind you up tonight by saying the world is round .anyway what i would do here is to ignore it as you have a distributor cap so how can the ECU sense no 6 misfire when its not connected to it i mean you could move the distributor and then change the leads round in the cap and would you still get the same code ,well i think you would and what i suspect is a mismatch of ECU where the line finished using distributors and went onto coil packs but you got the later ECU like friday night monday morning built car and having worked on a car assemble line at 18 yrs of age beleave me on this ,Just ignore the light or take the bulb out and clear the light when you go for the inspection as i do feel you are worrying about nothing and a little knowledge can be expensive or listen to the bar room mechanics who know a bit with one beer and are top motor vehicle technicians with 3 beers .If it runs ok and doesnt misfire or run lumpy leave well alone and do not play around with it .
