Audi A4, 58 plate, 2ltr, 211ps version, ecs and epc warning lights flickered and then came on together, engine running lumpily at low revs (<2000rpm), any ideas anybody?

You need to take the car into the dealer or a well equipped repair shop and have the control module scanned for faults. This takes a very special tool, this is not the little $35 code readers that parts stores sell.

Diagnose your Audi or VW Check-Engine light on your own

If you have an Audi or VW, and have ever had to take it to a dealership for work, you know how expensive it is. When your check-engine light comes on, you're looking at an hour's labor just for the five minutes it takes them to scan the computer and find the fault code(s). That's up to $126 for a five minute scan that doesn't even fix your problem.

Forget that - you can do it yourself if you have a laptop computer. Go to and download the factory diagnostic software (called VAGCom, for VW/Audi Group Communicator) to your laptop. The shareware version is free of charge, and will work for scanning fault codes that are set by the check-engine light, turning off airbag warning lights, ABS failure warnings, and some other tweaking and tuning (you can enable your key fob to open and close the windows and sunroof, delete the horn beep when you arm the alarm, or set the locks to lock the doors automatically at 15 mph and unlock when the key is removed, just to name a few). For the more serious home mechanic, you can buy the unlocked "real deal" version for $100. For most people, the shared free version is more than enough for your needs.

The only other item you need is an interface cable. This can be purchased on eBay for about $20. You need an OBD2 to USB diagnostic cable, readily available on eBay. Mine has worked without a hiccup for over three years, so don't worry about longevity on the cable.

Once you have this stuff, you're ready to go - plug the cable into your laptop, into the OBD2 port on your car, start VAGCom, and follow the on-screen instructions. It's very much worthwhile for anyone who owns a VW or an Audi, as many of the issues you come across can be taken care of at home, yourself, without paying hundreds of dollars to a dealership.

Aidi a6 is losing power when driving engie management light is on also particle

On any car if you get a check engine light or other fault light this typically means one or more of the sensors has failed or has a faulty connection.

The ECU senses this and may put the car into 'limp home' mode which typically limits the revs and the amount of power available. Usually the car is safe to drive for a short distance as the mode is intended is intended to get you home without incurring any engine damage

The best way to repair is to send the car to your nearest Audi service center for checks as they have the necessary tools and equipment to diagnose your car.

Best bet

A warning light in the shape of a gear box as appeared, what does this mean?

Means that you have to carry to the dealer for a computer diagnose. These cars have so many sensors that is virtually impossible to know exactly which one is activating the warning without a computer diagnose.

That's the way they are, My 1996 Cabriolet did it when I bought it new. I think it's meant to slowly wash you into reverse.

Warning light on audi a4

This is the indicator for ESP (stability control). If you look on your dash, you'll see a button with, you guessed it, ESP written on it. This allows you to turn your stability control on and off. If your light is on constantly, try pushing the ESP button. If it flashes on and off (ie during hard driving) this simply means it is working.

Audi A4 Electrical Fault

Get it to the dealer or a specialist auto electrician and find out why the engine management light is on. That and the other warning light is telling you there is a significant problem with the engine!! Not dealing with it WILL cost you a LOT of money!!

Oil Warning light.

I would take it to the dealer immediately. This could indicate a serious oil pump problem. It may be nothing, but if your oil pump goes out, your engine will lock up; and that means you'll, at best, be repairing major parts. At worst, you'll be buying a new car!
