Clove box! How cool, you can bake a ham as you drive. (sorry, couldn't resist). Noise under dash is probably because you have a vacuum leak somewhere and a blend air door is flapping. Part of 4wd system is vacuum operated. There is a vacuum can under the battery (brilliant placement, huh) and the lines to it often fail over time. Use a vacuum gauge and piece of hose, one end in ear, to listen around for a small whistle = leak.
I HAVE A 96 S10 LT BLAZER THE SYSTEM IS THE SAME THE WAY ITS WORKS IS ON ENGINE VACUUM A CABLE FROM A VACUUM ACTUATOR LOCATED UNDER THE BATTERY TRAY RUN TO THE SHFFT HOUSING THATS BOLTED TO THE FRONT CARRIER IT PULLS ON A SHAFT TO ENGAGE 4X4 THE PROBLEM IS THE CLIP THAT HOLDS THE CABLE TO THE SHAFT **** ITS NOT MUCH MORE THEN A PAPER CLIPI TOOK OFF MY SHIFT HOUSING BENT THE CLIP SO I WOULD ALWAYS WORK SEEING CHEVY WON;T SELL JUST THE CLIP WITH OUT THE CABLE I HAVEN;T HAD A PROBLEM SENCE
Try starting the vehicle , place the emergency brake on , switch from drive to nuetral. with engine running try to move the 4wd handle. If your handle moves in and out of 4 wheel drive and the selector handle moves into 2wd you need to drive the vehicle to get it out of 4 wheel low otherwise the 4 wheel drive solenoid may be stuck . This is located on the front axle . round with a vacuum line coming off it. Check the vacuum line at the solenoid or it may be the solenoid. Gook luck with your fix
Gasket = $35 (permatex rubber)
Labor - my manual says 3 hours.
You'll have to be responsible for figuring out the labor price per hour depending on where you are located.
In MI, a garage is about $50/hr, and dealership = $85/hr
CA might be $95/$150/hr.
Parts are minimal on the job - its all labor.
Figure in about $20 for shop supplies... gasket remover, sealant, rags, etc.
