Question about 2001 Mercury Sable

Car acts like its out of gas

When maintaining a certain speed, my car sort of jumps, or jolts like when it would if it were out of gas. But it's not out of gas. I thought perhaps the transmission fluid was low, but I checked and it was fine.

I've read many online problems similar to mine, and everyone seems to say the same. 'A bad fuel pump'. Its kind of sporadic, its fine when i accelerate, but when its just cruising at an given speed it sort of jumps. It also tends to get worse, and then weaken, and then jump worse again.

Ok thanks, will check it out, rather will have my boyfriend get it taken care of when he comes home on Tuesday.

Would the car still be safe to drive, or would it be best to refrain from driving it, or keep it to minimal?

I just want to check, could this behavior in any way be related to the transmission? (E.g. Lack of fluid.)

I'm pretty sure there is enough fluid, I check it regularly. However I know there is a minor leak that results in a small puddle of fluid beneath the car, if it sits for a few days.

Thanks for your previous advice, I will inform my boyfriend, and he can take care of it when he returns.

    Not that I know of.

How expensive is a fuel filter or getting a fuel system pressure test?

Also, it has only been the last few days that it has been jumpy like this. It was fine until now.

    Ok, thanks a bunch!

I can't wait until my boyfriend comes to get this sorted. I'll just have to bug him until he lets me drive his car until then, as I have classes next week and need to drive there, lol.

here's what you can do, try changing the fuel filter and see if that make a difference. If not have your fuel system pressure tested.

  • 89PBSE Dec 07, 2008

Well if the fuel pump is going bad on your car it could quit working at any moment. Leaving you stranded somewhere. So my advise would be don't drive it unless you really have to.
And if your not sure where the filter is located, just let me know

    Hope this helps.

Usually no from what you have described. Does your transmission have any problems shifting or has it ever slipped out of gear?

  • 89PBSE Dec 07, 2008

Sounds like your transmission is working fine if you haven't noticed anything with it.
A fuel filter will cost anywhere between 10-20 bucks, as for the fuel system pressure test I can't tell you how much that would cost, because I do it myself. My advice would be call around to different shops for the best price. Or ask anybody you might know if they can do it.

Hey glad I could help. I hope you can get it fixed.

Throttle Body Cleaning on vehicles without electronic throttle control (most 2003 and down)

You can in most cases repair this slow speed stall or unstable idle by cleaning the engine throttle valve and the idle speed control valve using a product called CRC Spray Throttle valve cleaner. Spray the cleaner into the air intake of the engine with the hose removed from the throttle body, the engine will try to stall so hold up the idle speed manually. Once you have used up about 1/2 can of the cleaner stall the engine out while spraying and turn the key off, disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes and then reconnect and drive the car for a about 25 miles of varied driving modes. If this doesn't cure the problem you may need the fuel injectors professionally cleaned by the dealer service dept.

Fuel in the oil could be a faulty injector or the fuel pressure regulator.

Why would my rpm jump and make my car seem to jolt forward? i was told it could be the camshaft sensor,or the throttle position sensor...any suggestions?

The TPC ( throttle position control) or the IAC (Idle Air Control) is defective. The TPC is bolted on behind throttle control. Takes very small hands to remove it. Symtoms are the engine will speed up to ~ 2000 or more RPM when the gas peddle is released. Almost like the Toyota problem. But you can apply the brakes to slow it down or stop.

Transmission speedometer problem

This all can be caused by a defective Vehicle Speed sensor, also called a VSS, also run a test on the computer to see if any codes are in memory that will help to sort this problem out.
