Question about 1997 Saturn SL

Open Question

Car Keeps Stalling out

My 1997 Saturn SL2 Manual tranny keeps stalling out whenever you take your foot off the gas. There is a leak in the valve cover gasket that hasn't been replaced yet. We changed the spark plugs and the car won't stay running. Also where is the fan motor? The heater works but the fan doesn't blow any air. The air is when the dial is set on vent. Thanks

SOURCE: 1995 Saturn SL2 5spd, occasional stalling

Hi,

Possibly, either that or some of your other sensor(s) might be likewise acting up. Perhaps your best bet would be to have a diagnostic scan to determine specifically the root cause/factors affecting your vehicles performance. once diagnosed, you may opt for replacing the erring component yourself or seek the services of a qualified professional.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: car hard to start after engine is warm

Sounds exactly like what I was dealing with a while ago. A nuisance (especially at fuel stations & such, where if you don't get it right away you end up looking like an idiot as it just turns over & over).

For me, it was my fuel filter. The previous owner had neglected the car so much & I had no idea how long it had been. $50 at an Oil Can Henrys & it was all back to normal. Great first step.

SOURCE: 1992 Saturn SL2 stalls after running about 5 minutes

my only guess is a vacuum hose leak. possibly a loose air filter housing, or the mass air flow sensor. look for any hoses unplugged. if nothing is noticed, try cleaning out your fuel system. if that doesnt solve it, then it would be something an experienced mechanic would have to come and examine it personally.

You need to change your ECTS and it's connector if it has gunk and corrosion in it. Change the ECTS to the brass tipped one and get rid of the plastic tipped one in the car.

Also change your Thermostat which is located inside the lower radiator hose on the engine block. Sounds like your car is running itself rich because it thinks it is cold and flooding itself (hence the full throttle which is a "clear flood mode" and shuts off the injectors while starting).

Car will not start without pressing gas pedal to keep idle speed up. If I keep idle at 900 RPM or higher it runs as long as foot is on gas pedal. It then stalls out when I take foot off gas pedal. No...

Have the idle bypass valve checked, also called idle air control valve.
If that valve is stuck in the closed position, it's not allowing the fuel to bypass the throttle plate to keep it idling, resulting in stalling, but will keep engine running if the pedal is pushed down.

My 93 Saturn SL2 intermittent stalling issues

I would look at the egr system. First pull the valve and clean it. If you have a vacuum tester this would be a good time to test the valve itself as well. When under load you should be able to see the diaphragm engage and hold and then release as you release the vacuum. If that doesn't work check and/or replace the egr solenoid. It's located on the driver's side of the valve cover and usually runs about 60$.

Yours is a common complaint and the above is the most common remedy. Outside of that you might want to check and clean the idle air control valve and the port where it's housed. If it is extremely dirty or something managed to get stuck in there that could affect you vehicle running at idle as well.

Another thing, even though you just changed the plugs, pull one back out and look at it. If is fouled with oil you might need a new valve cover gasket which if it's leaking badly enough will impede spark.

The car will start and run if you keep your foot on the gas, but the second you take your foot of the gas the car dies. What would cause this?

check for vaccum leaks, make sure throttlebody is clean.i would guess the car runs fine besides the stalling because you listed no other problems, so also check your iac (Idle air contorl) valve.

Run it into autozone or Pep Boys and get a free trouble code scan, and see what comes up, then we can go from there.

Saturn '99 SL2 erratic tickover on idle

Idle problem most likey a Coolant Temp sensor & connector.Cam covers very common to leak around the sides & down into the spark plug holes. Also all saturn s-series 1.9 engine consume oil. Most 1qt. per 1500 miles some more some less.Service Engine Lamp has nothing to do with regular maintenance. It's a malfunction indicator lamp.If it's on there is Trouble codes stored in the ECM.Auto zone free scan with printout.Hope that helps
