Replace multifunction switch on Pontiac Gran Prix 2000

Does the steering wheel need to be removed to replace the multifunction switch (turn, cruise, washer, wiper, hazzard, combined)? There is a cowl around the column that looks like it comes apart. Can you help?

I have the same problem - apparently Pontiac has a lot of switch failures. The dealership wanted $700 for the repairs. I note online that a new switch from the original manufacturer costs $267. Yikes!

So here's a million dollar question - why do the brake lights have to pass through a multi-function switch - if that is even the case? What ever happened to simple engineering.

Back brake light stay on, replaced brake switch same problem.Truck has over drive and cruies control If you take switch out of circuit the brake lights stay on the same with the turn/hazard flasher.

Your brake lights and your turn signals go through the multifunction (turn signal) switch. It is common for these switches to short internally. Partial disassembly of the steering column is required to replace it. The airbag stsyem must be disabled, then the airbag removed from the steering wheel. Then the steering wheel must be removed to access the screw in the front of the switch assembly. The rest is pretty easy... a few screws holing the lower cover of the dash, the shroud around the steering column and a few connectors to deal with. (see pictures of switch assembly below)
There are two types of these switches available for 2000 S-10. With cruise control and without cruise control. The one WITHOUT cruise control is much more expensive!

How replace turn signal switch 2000 chevy blazer?

Since the 2000 chevy blazer is equipped with SRS (Saftey Restraint System), ie: Airbags, which is located in the steering wheel. In order to replace the turn signal switch you must remove the steering wheel. Therefore I would only highly advise you to take it to a dealer to have this done.
