my Jetta overheats when idling because the fan is not kicking on. I have replaced the sensor on the top driver side of the ratiator and the problem persists. is there another sensor for the fan? where is the fuse for the fan located? any other suggestions are welcomed!

Switch the ignition on. disconnect the fan switch connector on the radiator. the connector plug should have three pins (if two then its easier). you can follow a diagram, but you can connect the thin wire's pin with one of the thick ones (dont worry, the wrong one wont short anything). the fan should go on at low speed. then connect the thick wire that worked to the other thick wire. the fan should go on at full speed. please ensure the ignition is on to test the full speed one as it doesnt operate with the ignition off. if neither works then check the fan control module. its under your water bottle. remove the water bottle then two screws will remove that unit. btw. they never give in, but maybe this is a first.

yes vw is very dependant on the cooling fan coolant pressure and expecially coolant mixture, check the gasket on the expansionbottle, as that can cause problems too, anyone of these will result in overheating

I have a 1999.5 jetta gls vr6. the fan control module is the 10 pin type. Are all 10 pin FCMs compatible? thanks

I would suggest that you call a VW dealer, the parts department can comapre your FCM part numer to all other VW's. if part number does not match, i would suggest against swapping FCM.
