The lifters are making noise probably because the oil pressure is low. You need to check oil pressure with a guage and see what it is. Did it just start doing this all at once or over a period of time?

You have an ELECTRICAL problem, It could be the Distributor, Ignition Module are my 2 Main Guesses without being there to Troubleshoot the vehicle. Check the following components. When it does, is there Spark?

If there is Spark, is the Timing Right? It could be out of Phase, Have you Checked your Crankshaft Sensor (Fuel Injected Model),

You need to follow the clues the car is telling you and it will lead you to the problem.

A Car Engine needs FUEL, AIR and SPARK to run.....

Rough banging drive

if it's and SL or VR4 the carrier bearings on the propshaft( driveshave from front to rear on AWD) can get loose and cause a banging.
check for slop in the joints between the rear diff and the wheels. you really need to pull and push things around as hard as you can to find something loose enough. Also the whole rear diff is on a frame that hase bushings connecting it to the car so the busshings could have worn.
check the fluid in the rear diff for metal particles and make sure there's no slop in the diff. the propshaft going into the rear diff on the awd should have a small amount of play no more than 5mm.

Hello! I presume from your brief description the ticking/clocking noise goes after a few seconds? if so I wouldn't be at all worried, your Hydraulic lifters are doing there job filling themselves with oil again and getting to work.
If However they are making a clicking/tappety type noise all the time then there is an additive you can purchase specifically designed to assist Hydraulic Lifters of which I would add after a Quality Oil and Oil filter change.
Hope This FixYa's Problem!
