Question about 2006 Jaguar XJ8

1 Answer

2005 Jaguar XJ8 won't start after going through the car wash.

My mechanics are stumped.  My car ran fine until I took it to the car wash! When they went to start it, the engine wouldn't turn over.  Electronics are working (GPS, windows).  Had it towed; mechanic "fixed" it, did a complete tune-up.  Two weeks later (yesterday) took it to the car wash again and again it wouldn't start.  Obviously this problem is related to going through the car wash.  Jag dealer said no clue; they wash cars all the time without problems.  But a guy at the car wash said he's seen severals Jags and BMWs have this happen.  I left the car to dry overnight, went back today, but it still won't start.  (the car is a 2005, but this site won't let me choose that option.)
Any ideas before I have it towed back to the mechanic?  Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

You get a gold star!!  Yes, it was indeed the ECM.  The drain was blocked with debris and so water was running on to the ECM.  My mechanic took it out, dried it, removed the debris, and installed a 2nd filter/screen to keep out debris.  My mechanic says that this filter can be cleaned with a blower to remove any leaves.  Now my car is running perfecting except for a new and probably unrelated problem.  Isn't it always something?

One of the sides that dispurses windshield wiper fluid isn't working.  I'll be taking my car back in (for the third time this month) to have that fixed.  But at least it's something small.

BTW, I suspect that the reason mechanics here in Los Angeles weren't aware of this problem is that a) it doesn't rain here much and b) most Jaguar owners garage their cars (I can't) and so there isn't much debris to block the drain.  I'm going to buy a car cover to help deal with this problem.

    Thanks again.

The new problem is that one of the windshield wiper fluid dispensers isn't working.  I "thought" that it might have to do with the new screen blocking it, but after checking it out further, it isn't even near the screen the mechanic put in.  My mechanic says that maybe one of the tubes is disconnected/broken because I'm getting a flow of wiper fluid on the ground.  I didn't let him fix it because I am taking a trip tomorrow (that has been postponed TWICE because my car has broken down), but the mechanic said that he'll need to open the area up and it will take some time (i.e., leave it for him to tinker with).  My mechanic also ENCOURAGED me to test his "improvement" by taking the car back to the carwash, but frankly, I'm scared it will break down again and I don't want to miss my trip.  I can live with my car not being washed this week and without one side of my wiper fluid working.

The situation with this car has been VERY frustrating.  I bought it used, but it didn't have a lot of mileage on it and it was only a 2005 (in 2007).  My previous car---a Japanese import---didn't break down even once in 7 years.  I love my beautiful Jaguar, but it seems to be somewhat quirky and cantankerous.  I thought the many problems with Jaguars were in the past?  And I'm irritated with the dealership mechanics for NOT KNOWING about the ECM problem.  You AND another UK mechanic responded immediately with the correct answer.  And why doesn't Jaguar put anything in the manual about keeping that area free of debris??  I realize that you can't speak for Jaguar (or Tata), so mostly I'm venting.  I want my family's old red XKE hardtop back; why did we ever sell it?

Underneath the pollen filter housing under the bonnet the ECM (engine control module) is located,If any of the drains are blocked you could be getting water into the ECM....Just a thought...Hope this helps

SOURCE: Problem with 2005 Jaguar XJ8L

Hi Tracy.
Yes its a new one to me too !
I presume its an automatic model ?
Possibly the gear selection inhibitor switch is at fault, due to water ingress ?
Have you tried starting in neutral ?
Do you hear any clicking from the engine starter at all, when you turn the key ?
If you do, then suspect the starter motor at fault.
I see you posted this on Dec the 6th, so expect you have located the problem by now, if not hope I have been of some help.
Best Wishes !
John.

My jaguar 2005 xj8 has problems starting after being run awhile it will try to start but won't crank

I have a Mercedes Benz and the part that causes that Same problem is the crank shaft position sensor. When its faulty it may not throw an engine light for that part. Benz, BMW, jaguar share a lot of the same German engineering and bosh parts.

2004 Jaguar XJ8 won't start after going through the car wash,

It sounds like the ignition control module shorted out due to the moisture. Get yourself a spark tester from the parts store. Have someone crank the engine will you check for spark. Here is one that will only cost about $7. Once you know if you have spark we will be able to help you better.

the ecm itself has a fuse, look for that first-if it does prove to be good, you probably have a bad ecm, and the window being down part way might indicate a short somewhere-are all fuses and fusible links good?

I ran out of gas and after fueling the car it still wont start dont think its getting any gas. the car is a 2001 jaguar xj8. How or where can i check fuel system?

if you ran completely out of gas you may have harmed the fuel pump, the gas is what keeps the fuel pump bearings lubricated.there is one thing you can try that has work alot of times in my line of work, the pump could just be stuck and you have one chance to get it going again, have a friend try to start your car while you hit the bottom of the fuel tank with a hammer, sometimes this vibration will unlodge the pump
