Question about 2006 Jaguar XJ8

Problem with 2005 Jaguar XJ8L

My mechanics are stumped.  My car ran fine until I took it to the car wash! When they went to start it, the engine wouldn't turn over.  Electronics are working (GPS, windows).  Had it towed; mechanic "fixed" it, did a complete tune-up.  Two weeks later (yesterday) took it to the car wash again and again it wouldn't start.  Obviously this problem is related to going through the car wash.  Jag dealer said no clue; they wash cars all the time without problems.  But a guy at the car wash said he's seen severals Jags and BMWs have this happen.  I left the car to dry overnight, went back today, but it still won't start.
Any ideas before I have it towed back to the mechanic?  Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Thanks for the input.  I did get the problem solved (sorry I hadn't posted that).  The problem was pretty simple.  There's an air intake vent over the passenger's side.  It's got a drain at the bottom, but because the area is open, the drain got clogged with debris.  When a lot of water hit my car (i.e., the car wash, but it could have just rained), the water overflowed the intake and poured on to the Engine Control Module (ECM).  My mechanic took out the ECM, let it dry in the sun, and the car was fixed.  He did put in a "lovely" modification---a screen to prevent the drain from getting debris blockage again.

And this is a laugh---because it doesn't rain here in LA and most owners' garage their cars, the dealership had no idea what the problem was.  But I got responses from two UK mechanics who said that it happens all the time there.....  So now we have a solution.  Thanks again for your info though.

I have the same problem. The car died after leaving the car wash last week. Had it towed into the dealer. They said a fuse had blown. Replaced the fuse, and low and behold it died again when I took it back to the car wash today.... Car is back at the Jag dealer... going to share the post with the mechanic tomorrow. Will let you know if it is the same fix.

Hi Tracy.
Yes its a new one to me too !
I presume its an automatic model ?
Possibly the gear selection inhibitor switch is at fault, due to water ingress ?
Have you tried starting in neutral ?
Do you hear any clicking from the engine starter at all, when you turn the key ?
If you do, then suspect the starter motor at fault.
I see you posted this on Dec the 6th, so expect you have located the problem by now, if not hope I have been of some help.
Best Wishes !

Underneath the pollen filter housing under the bonnet the ECM (engine control module) is located,If any of the drains are blocked you could be getting water into the ECM....Just a thought...Hope this helps

Start with one quart but continue to put it in until the level reaches the full mark on the dipstick. Your car requires synthetic oil, 5/30w is fine, personally I wouldn't put synthetic in right away as I would check to see if it starts first and then if it does, change all the oil to synthetic asap. I say this only because there is no point pouring expensive oil into an engine that may require major repairs...which is possible if it was run low on oil for any length of time.

Hope this helps,

XJ8L would not start

You may have a gasket leaking oil to the engine cylinders. Once you got it started the oil burned off and the engine will run fine until the next time....
Unfortunately, on this car, it a VERY expensive problem to get fixed.
If the problem occurs again, be careful not to flood the engine. Try to get it running again, and take it in for a professional estimate and repair.

Engine cranks, but does not start

My suggestion to this is to check the basics. Check fuel pressure and check spark during crank. There is no quick answer for a no start condition. You always have to start by checking the basics. An engine with no spark or fuel will not start every time.
