Question about 1994 GMC Sonoma

1994 somona craps out

Truck loses power and craps out when shifting into third and fourth...also notice a knock in the engine. I have changed the o2 sensor,fuel filter and catalaytic. converter.but still craping out.he top end of the motor has been rebuilt with a new head and there is no leaks.

Maybe time to rebuild the bottom of the motor

Why does it occasionally lose power going uphill?


Sounds like it's starving. Change your filters lately. How about those O2 sensors especially the upper ones.

Transmisson wont shift from second to third


you may try reving engine alittle higher try shifting to fourth if that works your third gear sincroniser is shot

Run a bottle of Lucas Tranny Conditioner in it with next oil & filter change. Continue to do that and somewhere about the 5th change you should notice smoother shifting and better fuel mileage.

Transmission (1994 astro van ) shifts fine sometimes and other times feels like it stuck in 4th gear. i changed the filter and flushed the trans.Whats up with that?


Its more likely the tranny shift solenoids or the power wire going to the tranny. If the tranny loses its ignition feed (12Volts) it will default into limp home mode. This means neither shift solenoid has power and will be in the off position. When both shift solenoids are in the off position this is normally third gear. It will be very labored taking off from a stop being in third gear, but will allow you to still move (thus limp home). Astro vans were not known for it, however full size pickups with the same engine and tranny, would experience a bad ignition switch. It would disable the tranny circuit and no power would get to it, same symptoms. If it sometimes works it won't be a bad fuse, best to have it diagnosed at a reliable transmission shop to verify. Its not as expensive as a tranny overhaul.

Car stuck in gear


Is it an automatic or standard? If it's standard, check the shifter cable, automatic, I would do a fluid flush, change the tranny filter, and make sure the pan isn't bent. I know someone who had the same problem, they thought they needed a new tranny, but they just needed a new filter (cost a couple bucks at the auto parts store), and then they noticed the pan was bent, which wasn't allowing clearance for the larger gears to be engaged.
