Don't know specifically what Mercury you have, but typically the water pump is dead center on the front of the motor. If it has an engine driven fan then that would attach to the front of the water pump.
You have to remove your belt ...fan ...and fan shroud then remove outer bolts off water pump housing take off replace with new water pump and GASKET, seal gasket with permatex before placing gasket in place then rebolt new water pump on and your golden.....make sure no dirt or debris gets in ...im glad i can help ...
CLUTCH ON COOLING FAN FREEWHEELING. COOLING FAN SHOULD HAVE RESISTANCE WHEN TURN WITH HAND WHEN ENGINE HOT.IF NOT FAN FREE WHEEL FAN CLUTCH NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.IF COOLING FAN OKAY.YOU COULD HAVE BLOWN HEAD GASKET.YOUR RADIATOR AND ENGINE BLOCK NEED FLUSHING OUT.CHECK WATER PUMP FOR LEAKING WEEP HOLE IF LEAKING REPLACE WATER PUMP.
Drain the coolant when it is cold and pull off the upper and lower radiator hose. Put a garden hose in the radiator neck (after removing the radiator cap) and turn the water up gradually and let it run for 15 to 20 minutes or until the flow is constant. If your water pump is not noisy or leaking and the pulley is not wobbling then you should not have to replace the water pump. You may want to flush out the block with water also. Not too bad,you have to remove fan,to get the water pump mounting bolts.take off the belt, remove the pump. Some people remove the radiator for more room ,this no big deal, just remove the top 2 bolts, remove upper, lower hoses, pull the fan cover off.You don't put RTV on gasket, also there's an small o ring that has to be replace, behind the pump.
drain engine coolant.relieve belt tension .and remove the drive belt.remove upper fan shroud.remove fan or fan and clutch assembly.remove water pump pulley and coolant hoses from water pump.remove water pump bolts.then remove pump from engine.pay attention to bolts location because they are different lenghts.clean water pump gasket mounting surface dont scratch .or pump gasket wont seal and leak .apply sealant to water pump bolts.install water pump with new gasket.if gasket paper put a sealant on it.torque water pump bolts to 30 ft lbs.if you got a 2.2L engine torque water pump bolts to 18 ft lbs.install coolant hoses on pump .install water pump pulley.install fan and fan clutch assembly.install the drive belt .and the upper fan shroud.fill the radiator with coolant.then run engine to check for leaks.WARNING AS A SAFETY PRECAUTION REMOVE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE SO CAR WONT BE CRANK BY ACCIDENT. ALSOOOO DONT FORGET TO TURN OFF RADIO FIRST BEFORE DISCONNECTING BATTERY SO YOU WONT LOSE YOUR RADIO CODE.
These engines are identified as an interference engine and on no account must the crank shaft and cam shaft be moved with the timing belt removed. You no not need to remove the water pump. You need to remove the water pump pulley only (not the water pump). I trust this helps.
