89 Seville, Power Steering Lockup, Battery Not Charging Light,
While driving today, the Battery Not Charing light and the Temp Light came on. The power steering failed, though I was still able to drive the car. Slight smell of coolant under the hood. Air conditioner was not on, was not idling long, not driving upi hills. This problem has never occurred. Any suggestions? Thanks, Marc

assuming you have got a battery warning light on dash? And it obviously doesn't go out. check the large red wire at the back of the alternator with a multi meter and you should have same voltage there as at the battery and its in good condition . If you have a good voltage there and a good engine earth then you need to disconnect the small wire at the back of the alternator - that should put out the warning light on the dash, This will prove the warning light circuit is ok. As long as your vehicle battery is ok and has a good voltage the only other thing that could be wrong apart from the alternator itself is the drive belt being broken or loose.
Have you inspected the belt? It is probably stretched or damaged...the belt turns the power steering unit, and charges your battery via the alternator...(low battery light) Did you drive through some deep water last night? Be sure to inspect this so you do not get stranded. Hope this helps.
I would be looking at the drive belt missing or so bad that it has to be replaced . The battery light is from the alternator not charging --- the increase in temperature is from the water pump not working and the hard steering is from the power steering pump not working. All indications that the drive belt is missing or shot.
I am assuming you mean you loose power steering when the steering wheel locks up, which would be a normal event if the engine dies. Same goes for the battery light since the alternator would stop charging the battery.
Someone will need to figure out if you are loosing fuel or spark when the engine dies, then troubleshoot the problem. It may be difficult to find if the mechanic can not duplicate the problem in the shop.
Are you sure the drive belt is still on the engine ? The battery light usually comes on when the alternator is not charging the battery, and the power steering is also belt driven. The brake warning light can come on when the brake fluid is low, but also when the battery light comes on.
Volt light on indicate the altenator is not charging the battery the temp light means it's over heating and difficult steering means the power steering isn't working properly.
Common to all of these would be your serpentine belt which drives all of these items. have it replaced
you have a faulty alternater there is a speed sensor in the alternator that is linked to the power steering if the alternater isnt charging the steering wont work either replace the alternater and all should be ok
Sounds like the serpentine bellt has come off the drive pulleys. this belt is the link between the crankshaft pulley and all the other pulleys. it drives the power steering pump, a/c compressor, and your alternator.
Stiff steering due to no Power steering pump activity and the battery light is on due to the alternator not charging the battery and supplying power to vehicle components.
