Question about 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
I was reading a solution to a problem posted by a 1996 grand cherokee owner.
I have the same issues, the dome light (which is supposed to turn off after I turn the ignition off) stays on, flickers on and off constantly, and finally 10-15 minutes later turns off.
As akward as this sounds, everytime I turn left--the light turns off. As soon as the steering wheel goes to a neutral position or turns to the right it comes back on.
Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!
OK I had the same problem. What is happening is, the door, while closed, is a bit loose. When you turn left the force of the turn causes the weight of the door to close tighter, which in turn pushes on the light switch turning off the light. The solution - well you will need to look at the latch on the door, there are 3 bolts that hold the latch inside the door frame. What happened to mine was that the sheet metal that the bolts go thru was cracking, causing the latch to become slightly loose. This may be what happened to yours. but you will need to inspect the latch first, if there is no cracking, then the latch may just need to be adjusted and tightened. If there is sheet metal cracking, then you will need to fabricate a solution, either by making a plate to reinforce the latch bolts, or (what I did, and it still works 6 month later) use thin washers under the bolt head to help stabilize the latch. They must be thin as the bolts may not pass the striker plate clearly if they are too thick and the bolts are very shallow anyways. If you choose to try yourself, remember that removing all 3 bolts will cause the latch to fall inside the door, so you'll have to mess with them one at a time. unless you are extemely handy, and mechanically inclined I recommend getting with a mechanic or body shop.
