2001 Cadillac Deville; noise after the engine starts

As soon as the engine has started it takes a minute for the rpms to come down. Just recently it has began to make a high pitched wineing sound during this period. The noise goes away as soon as the engine has dropped to around 700-900 rpms, and does not return. Any idea's? Additionally, while the noise is happening, accelerating the engine does not change the pitch as the engine RPM's increase or decrease. This problem for me just started as the temperature changed to the cold winter. Also, after the noise goes away after initial start up, the noise does not return after you turn the car off and immediately restart it. The noise only happens on initial start or after shutdonw, when the car completely returns back to the ambient cold temperature and you start it again.

I changed the water pump belt. The noise does not stop. I feel the important factor is that the noise does not change pitch as the engine is accelerated. In my opinion that rules out belts or any type of accessory that is run off of the engine power.

Sir,

What you do is run the engine up to normal operating temperature and pour in approx 1/3 to 1/2 of the contents of the can into the throttle body real fast until it stalls out the engine.

Turn the car OFF and let it sit overnight. the next morning it will be extremly hard to start but it will eventually start and get it back up to normal operating temperature and raise the idle speed up to about 1500 rpm's and SLOWLY pour the rest of the contents of the can into the throttle body. You do NOT want to stall the engine. Once the product is all gone keep running the engine until all the smoke clears from the exhaust pipe and see if your knock is gone.

also check with fuel injectors..

thanks
good luck

sounds like a bearing is going bad. sometimes the bearing will have manufacture defects causing the metal balls in the bearing to grind and break down

if the sound is from engine
buy some gunk oil treatment or i hear seafoam works good too. put it in 5 min before oil change and it will clean the build up in oil passages and free the sticky valves then use mobil one full synthetic oil its much better plain oil wont help it ive tried. and the noise will go away untill its time to do it again. i usually get 4-5 months noise free then it will start again.

the idler pulley can  also make noise, but not very common. It can do it though.

it might be injector problems but the injectors themselves are not loud enough to be heard over the other engine noise.
Spark plugs, ignition wiring, fuel filters cannot 'make noise.' Any of those can cause the car to run rough but not cause any specific noise unless it is related to the engine misfiring and in that case, it wouldn't just be a source of noise but also inadequate acceleration and a prominent jerking of the car at low RPMs. Carbon buildup is the likely cause although causing any engine to lug (drive in a higher gear at low speeds) can damage bearings in the engine, creating excessive bearing play and a knocking noise under some conditions. Also, a failed exhaust manifold gasket or associated pipes being cracked can really cause a racket.
Without us hearing the noise, it's kind of hard to diagnose it, but the above might give you some guidance.

Usually the noise is caused by a loose or worn out belt in the engine. The best thing is to have it looked at, or if your not worried and you think the belt is fine, buy some belt lubricant at your local automotive store and put it on. You can open the hood and confirm this when you start the car next time.

What it also could be is the vacuum for the coolant otherwise. Have you opened the hood to narrow down where the noise is coming from as that would help narrow it down for sure. If the belt is loose, what it may be doing is spinning faster than say the alternator or p/s pump and when you increase the rpms, the pitch may only change slightly or not at all because those components in turn spin faster but not at the same rpms as the belt and the engine.

HOW CAN YOU TELL IF YOU HAVE A BAD WATER PUMP IN 2001 DEVILLE

Hi there
A bad or worn water pump ,you will either boil the engine water system or loose water or coolant while driving and when you stopped or water [temp] light will come on when it gets down in the header tank,AND
you will hear the grinding noise as soon as you start the engine and the water pump pulley will move about when running and water will start leaking .
Let me know how you go.

I have a 2001 Cadillac deville that will not start when I turn the key it clicks for a few seconds and nothing. The service anti thift soon came on, on the dash the day before the radio stopped working...

It's hard to say for sure since it sounds like it could be many things. If you turn the key and you hear a few clicks coming from the engine and then nothing, it could mean a very very weak battery. Your first step should be trying a different (fully charged) battery. Good luck.

2001 Cadillac Deville; noise after the engine starts

The whine sounds like the power steering or the alternator, as far as the idle issue goes try this clean the intake throttle body and idle speed control valve with carb spray, disconnect battery for 5 min. then reconnect and drive a few miles to reset idle strategy. The car will try to die when you spray the intake, hold the idle up to prevent that, use at least 1/2 the can of carb spray.
