i have the same problem with my '99 malibu. I went to another site for assistance and the feed said that you need to check the coolant level. It could be a leak. If it IS a leak, you need to get it fixed right away. Also, you are supposed to check under your oil filler cap. If it has a whitish/brownish gunk build up, you have
the dreaded intake manifold gasket leak. If that's the case, take it
to be repaired asap. I will leave the web address to the feed if that helps...even though it's a different car, i'm sure they are similar--

I have a 97 Cutlass. The low coolant light is on as well. After talking to some of my mechanic buddy's this is a know problem with this model of vehicle (Cutlass/Malibu). You can either replace the coolant reservoir with the sensor or just ignore the problem as even with replacing the parts it is likely to come back on.

Hope this helps

I hope you have resolved this by now. If not, you can simply unplug the sensor. It will turn off the warning light and wont affect anything. The sensor is located on the passenger side of the radiator. It is hard to see it but its there!

With no Hot Coolant going past the Sensor, you get a false reading.
Low coolant is why the sensor wasnot telling you the engine was running hot.

2000 vw beetle 2.0 L, low level coolant light...engine mil code 1256

not the pump but air in the system or a broken wire to the coolant level sensor
that sensor at the top of the radiator tank has to be completely immersed in coolant or the circuit is broken and the light comes on
same effect id the wire to that sensor is broken in the insulation

Replaced water pump due to overheating, now overheating again and computer says low engine coolant when I check water its fine. could this be the thermostat? where is the thermostat located on 1997 Aurora?

Since you replaced the pump, the coolant reservoir probably got empty during the process and sometimes the level sensor inside it tends to get stuck. Look at the reservoir and on the bottom of it there should be some wires coming out of it, that's where the level sensor is. Lightly tap it with a pair of pliers and it should come up therefor removing the low coolant light. Now for the overheating, turn on the car and let it come up to temp, open the hood and make sure your fans come on when they're suppose to. If the temp is going higher and the fans don't come on then you need to check the fan relays or the coolant sensor. Turn on the ac, the condenser fan should start up, see if that helps it cool down. If the radiator fan does not come on, unplug it and plug it straight to the battery to see if it turns on, if not, you need a new fan, if it works then like i said, relays, fuses, sensor. Oh, i almost forgot, replace the THERMOSTAT as well.

I would start with the cheapest fix first. Change the air filter and then replace the coolant temp sensor. Then perform another ODBII scan. Let the scan be your guide to any repairs to avoid buying parts you don't need.
