Ajkill is right. I had the same problem with the fuel light always being on and the guage read empty no matter how much fuel is in the tank. I had to have the fuel level sensor in the tank replaced. This is something that they have to drop the tank for. It was about $400 with the part and labor at the dealership.

Sounds like the sensor is failing.Have oil pressure checked with a mechanical gage to confirm. A new sensor or wiring repair is allot cheaper then a new engine!!

I suppose the engine code said that cylinder was not firing or faulty? I would immediately get a compression check done on the engine. It is relatively painless. My burnt valves (compression 10psi vs 150psi) could not be diagnosed any other way. Does this help?

i have the same problem and it will cost to have it fixed.but right now we are using our trip odometer by 1st fulling up and refueling at 300 miles then resetting.as far as the check engine it could be as smple as a lose gascap. go to advance auto parts and ask them to check it.they will do it for free.if you buy the part from them you can take it back and they will clear your codes.hopes this helps you get by for a while

hey the reason your gas gauge is going from full to empty is that your fuel pump which is in the gas tank has a sensor that relays how much gas the tank has in it, the sensor is gone bad and will have to be replaced. And your engine light problem is probley due to putting gas in the car while it is running, my wife has a 2005 malibu and we have had the same problems with her car hope this was helpful
