Check the speed sensors at the front and rear of the transmission housing for proper operation, replace if faulty. They're what allows the onboard computer to determine vehicle speed and transmission shift points. If they toss bad numbers, it'll cause the problem you describe. While you probably have fixe or sold your truck by now, I'm posting for future reference. Hope this helps someone.

4th gear is shifted electrically. If you have a 4.7 engine the following advise does not apply(different trans) but most likely culprit it the output speed sensor
in tail end of the trans. The PCM uses TPS, vehicle speed, output speed sensor and OD switch to know when to shift to 4th. 4.7 engine uses a 45rfe trans and would require a scanner to diag.

fuel pump is on the engine or either in the gastank follow the fuel line chevys are the easiest auto to work on a new i think yours is in your tank remove both straps and remove hose to filler neck. the fuel **** is in the center of th tank removed by a lock washer system holding the pump in also be careful that you follow the fuel lines though and that you remove bolts that hold the fuel ine to the frame and up to the engine or fuel filter then engine an up to the carb that way you can lower tank without bending fuel line any way however you took it off put it back if a human put this thing together then a human can fix it

Cruise control won't engage

cruise controls are governed by 5 settings and sensors
one is engine rpms
vehicle road speed ,( manual transmission will not activate under 20 klms /hr
brake pedal switch
clutch pedal switch ( VSS if auto)
off/on switch control
any one of these not lined up will not allow the cruise control to work

The cruise control on my 2001 just quit working i have checked the fuses and all are ok while driving i can engage the criuse control and the cruise light comes on for an instant almost like a flash any...

A vehicle speed sensor provides a signal for the cruise control and also for the ABS braking and the overdrive function. I would start with finding the fuse for the cruise control in your owners manual. Also some cruise controls have vacuum lines attached, if so, check for cracked or broken vacuum lines. Good luck.

I need to know what is the proper use of the O/D off button

Typically Overdrive is engaged when cruising, when the car is in top gear. Whether the activation button is on the dash, or on the gear selector, makes little difference to how the Overdrive system works. Pressing it will disable the overdrive. Personally, I have left the OD on in every vehicle I have owned at all times. If left on it will only engage at a certain RPM (highway speeds etc.). I hope this helps and good luck. Hyundai Overdrive wont engage

It is not suggested strip and twist wires. Better take it to an authorized service station to check what causes the problem. Is it OVERDRIVE SWITCH or CRUISE CONTROL MODULE faulty?
Over drive switch has three points. (5 to 4 selects "ON" or 5 to 6 selects "OFF").
Right click on following schematic, "save picture as" to a location in your PC so you have a ZOOM IN view.
