  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then drain the radiator.
CAUTION When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.
  1. Remove the heater hoses from the core. The top hose connects to the water pump and the lower hose goes to the thermostat housing.
  2. Remove the cables and all electrical connections from the heater and defroster assembly.
  3. Remove the nuts from the core case studs located on the firewall.
  4. From inside the car, remove the case-to-firewall mounting screws and also the heater and defroster assembly.
  5. Remove the retaining springs and core.
To install:
  1. Install the core and retaining spring, making sure the core-to-case sealer is in good shape.
  2. Install the heater and defroster assembly, then install and tighten the case-to-firewall mounting screws.
  3. Install the nuts to the core case studs on the firewall.
  4. Install the cables and engage all electrical connectors to the heater and defroster assembly.
  5. Engage the heater hoses to the core.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable, then refill the engine cooling system and check for leaks.

SOURCE: need to replace heater core

The heater core in 1985 was still accessed from the engine compartment. After you drain the cooling system, disconnect the heater hoses. They should be 2 different sizes so take note of which one goes where. Unplug the electrical from the case and then unbolt it. Pull it off and replace the heater core.
If you have A/C then it is a little more complicated. After you remove the heater hoses there is a retaining bracket and ground strap that have to come off first. Then take off the rubber seal and screen. The right wiper arm needs to come off next followed by the diagnostic connector, high blower relay and thermostatic switch. Now you can unplug the electrical from the case and the top cover and screen and take the heater core out.
Once you have it back together, when you go to bleed the air out of the system, make sure the heater is turned on maximum heat and the fan is on high. This will ensure that coolant goes through the new heater core. Hope this helps.

Has been sitting for 10 years it is a 1982 el camino conquista. how would i get it started

Long time sitting so the carburetor will need to be torn down and rebuilt first. The fuel tank will need to be cleaned as well. Radiator shops do that with a pressure check. Change the fuel filter and a new gas line is recomended as well. Varnish is in the lines as you may know from sitting for ten years. All rubber hoses are dry rotted too although they may look good to the eye. The radiator will need to be pressure check and the heater core too. Coolant sitting in these parts will soak the metallic parts and soften the metals causing build up to plug these cores up from age. You will be better off replacing the radiato and heater core for I know if not drained ten years back they will be no good to use
