Re: Info panel by gear shifter is not working anymore 96...
The info center was not working in my 96 jeep when i got it. it serves no major purpose other than a clock and to let you know when your doors are open. i replaced mine the part itself can be found at junkyards fairly cheap. i paid $65 for mine. and now i wish i had left it alone. constant annoyances and chimes.

Theo, have a good tech. check linkage/shifter/cable/bushings/mount diagnose and estimate repair.

sound to me like a basic sloppy shifter, did you inspect the shifter and all parts associated? usually the synco dont stop shifts, only causes grinding unless, it is shattered. (rare that) it only matches speeds, so if cracked in half , you can shift by double shifting , like racers and truckers did for years, "crash boxes" RTM http://hondatech.info/downloads/Auto/Manuals/Civic/
Could be the brake light switch or the solenoid that locks the shifter in park. Sometimes there is a button or tab near the shifter to unlock it in an emergency. Sometimes you can take it out of park if you turn the key but not to the on position. Your owners manual should have these procedures, and you can do an internet search for the process to take the console out if needed.
may be 2 different problems. saftey switch at gear shifter may be at fault for key. to remove key locate small plug in steering column below key and remove. insert small screw driver in hole to depress saftey lock and turn back key.
Have codes checked . My first guess would be that the shift control module is not working properly, speed sensor could be out of range, and giving module incorrect info, but that's why there are tests.
