Its most likely the wiper mechansim which rusts and jams. You need to take off the wiper arms by removing bolts and pulling off (quite hard). You then take plastic cowling off the car, start with a small knife passenger side and lever off, the rest will unclip as you pull. You will then see the mechanism. It is removed by 3 bolts, unhook the motor and pull the mech out. You will then see which parts are stiff and use a bit of WD40. You may have to take the whole thing apart and clean with wire brush. I tried but still didn't work so had to buy one from a scrap yard.

Hope this helps

Hi i have a mk4 golf, my front wipers were slow but now have stopped altogether, any ideas what problem could be?

If they slowly died it is most likely the wiper motor. Over time the brushes in the motor will wear down and the motor will need replacement.

I have a 1998 golf mk4 1.9 tdi. the electrics seem to work when they wont to! and are doing funny things! for example my headlights stop working! the work the next day ? when i start my car the back...

Windshield Wiper Motor could be causing starting and stopping where it feels like: REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Fig. 1: Remove the water shield fasteners 91226p14.jpg
Fig. 2: Using a suitable pry tool, lift up the base of the clip while turning the head 91226p13.jpg

When removing the wiper motor, leave the mounting frame in place. If possible, do not remove the wiper drive crank from the motor shaft.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the water shield at the base of the windshield.
  2. Disconnect the relay rods from the wiper motor.
  3. Note the position of the crank arm on the shaft. When the motor is in the parked position, the arm should be about 4 degrees up from horizontal.
  4. Disconnect the wiring and remove the bolts to remove the motor from the frame. To install:
  5. Temporarily connect the wiring and run the motor. When the wiper switch is turned OFF, the motor will stop in the parked position.
  6. Install the motor and connect the linkage.
  7. Run the motor again and make sure the arms and blades are properly positioned when the motor stops.
After looking at the schematics, I couldn't determine which subsystem may be causing your problem with the headlights. There is a daytime running lamps subsystem, but I am not sure if that's causing the problem. There are fuses involved but not sure if that's the problem.

There's a solid state headlight switch, but I'm not sure if that's a problem.

On the headlight issue, if it doesn't come back, just consider it a bug or glitch.

Have you had a battery changed on it recently?

The wipers/washers/indicators/blower have all stopped working at the same time on my 2003 VW Golf Mk4. Is there a fuse that would stop all these working at the same time. Cheers

Check the ignition barrel. If this is worn and the key is a fraction past the normal running position (but not far enough to turn the start motor of course) then this may disable these.

These are disabled on many vehicles whilst the start motor turns to enable that to get maximum power.

There is unlikely a fuse that does all of the above.

either the splines are stripped that hold the wiper arms, (remove the arms and visually inspec the splines) the wiper motor is dead or the switch on the column is broken. all are available used at your local junk yard
