Intermittent starting problem-now will not start

Hi,the car is a 1996 E280 auto estate with 118000 miles on.
The problem, over the last 2 weeks or so the car would some times start straight away and other time would crank over a lot before starting.Last night would not start and battery went flat, put battery on charge and the cranks over very well but will not fire up and have cranked over for a long time.Checked fuses all good.Over the last 2 weeks of starting problems, when started the car has driven spot on with no other faults as its always done.Any help in tracing the faulty item would be appreciated.
Thank you..........Jon.

2006 Cadillac cts is burning gas faster than the normal rate after i got an oil change at jiffy lube 2 weeks ago

I dont think there is a connection between an oil change and the gallons per mile.
With that age car, I suggest a Terra engine clean. It will blow away nine years of gunk from the spark plugs, fuel injectors, cylinders and exhaust. Should give you more power, more miles..

Running so few miles has accelerated the aging of the battery - the battery never had a chance to fully recharge in such small trips -  so now you have to replace it a year sooner than usual.
Just replace it.

The car is a 2001 ford mondeo estate 2.0 zetec ,it misfires then cuts out but does restart straight away and there are no faults shown on the dashboard ie clocks ,the ht leads and spark plugs have been...

check that your spark plugs are new and gaped to specs.
Check your coil for any signs of wear sometimes they can receive hairline fractures and cause misfire. And check your MAF sensor this can cause misfire this is the sensor inline after your air filter. Pull it out and clean it preferably with some light solvent or WD-40 will do.

My c180 auto estate won't change gear, it pulls away in first gear but won't change up

Tony

This vehicle will have no doubt covered a lot of miles and the auto transmissions on them are not, in any event, particularly durable (just complex and expensive). Some are inadequately serviced and, in these cases, the life is even shorter.

The problem you are experiencing is an indication that the transmission is dying and in due course you can anticipate total failure. As it is, it is not really drivable.
The only fix is to replace the transmission with a rebuilt one which will be very expensive. Some auto transmissions in this model have also had serious computer control problems but in your case, from what you have said, I believe it is wear and tear of the transmission components.

Unfortunately, if you own one of these cars with significant miles on it, you can expect to have significant and expensive mechanical issues to rectify to keep the car running and roadworthy.

Engine starts, but won't stay started unless I step on the gas.

It sounds like to me your mechanic recommened you change your timing belt and water pump due to a maintance issue. If vehicle still runs good with old timing belt new belt wont change running. Cold weather and low cranking amps (poor battery) will cause starting problems.
