Hello astra....Un fortunately the oldes S-Types do suffer from this.....If you dont want to chance a new gearbox,ya gotta live with it ..As long as you have your foot on the brake its ok so sit at the lights while in D

this garage is fobbing you off ,hope you havent paid for any work till you have test driven it .Take vehicle to a big jaguar main agent and see what they say because this type of thing does happen with these jags or so i have been told ,rang simon a mate with more jag experiance than me and he was un commital because anything can cause this problem and he seems to think that the ECU is up the swannie without a paddle ,but i have no experiance on this model as such ,i prefer a morris minor or a 2cv citreon to repair .best of british with it anyway ,and always remember a tip from this crafty cockney ,when you go to pick up a vehicle from a garage take the spare key and disappear in the car for a test drive before you pay for the repair .If it not right dont pay till its put right ,you are within your rights here ,if they block car in the second time because it didnt run right the first time and will not release the vehicle for a test drive then call the police .Dont take shoddy workmanship lying down ,i always tell customer to take car and try it for a day or two then come back to pay ,never had a knocker yet and a waiting list of customers. If i cannot fix a car i will not charge for it ,only the parts used
karen, this is a very common problem on all x types .the part required is a heater controle panel .,it has three knobs ,the fault occurs in the circuit board built in to the controle panel , second hand from a jag breaker is about 50.00 pounds regards keith
Sticky transmission I call that. Go see a few garages and a few quotes with guarantee on workmanship..
Mind you I started on big trucks with Allison transmissions and we overhauled those.
Too long a story to explain those transmissions.
Replace transmission and sell quickly. I bought 2001 s-type in October 2008. I have not been able to drive it. 1st thing was gearbox fault message which turned out to be transmission. Ford can rebuild cheaper. Next thing to happen was all seals needed replacing. Then all coils needed to be replaced. Coils keep going out. Needs new computer which has 8 year/80000 mile warranty on, but Jag would not honor ($3000). Needless to say my pretty jag sits in the driveway. Had to get another car. Went with Lincoln LS V8. GREAT car!
I have a 2002 X type (2 litre. done 44000 miles), dash showed gear box problem, (red circle light up). I pulled out and turned the engine off. 5 minutes later turned the engine on. The engine running but the car would not drive either in drive or reverse. Turned the engine off again and on the car driving but not much power. The care is taken to the Jag. dealer and told is misfiring + some gear box faults. Suggesting to change some coils and see (cost about £200+). also possible need to change the gear box costing about £2500+. Please advice. Shall I go ahead with the repair? Should I part exchange.
