Location of No 1 cylinder and direction of rotation

I wish to locate No 1 cylinder to enable camshaft timing. The camshaft belt was broken so unable to use old belt as aid to setting the camshaft timing with new belt.

Also, in which direction does the engine revolve?

On the shafts you should be able to see little engraved dots rotate shafts to dots meet together this should bring everything to top dead center every shaft make has this tool mark ingraved in them

Did your special tool ?
Rotate the crankshaft using the J 42098 until the #1 cylinder is at 60 degrees before top dead center (BTDC).
Install theJ 42069 Crankshaft Locking Tool.
Rotate the crankshaft in the engine rotational direction (clockwise) using the J 42098 until the #1 cylinder is at top dead center (TDC) and tighten the lever arm to the water pump pulley flange.
Important: Ensure that the alignment of the crankshaft is not 180 degrees off. The alignment mark must align with the corresponding notches on the rear timing belt cover.
Install the 1-2 and 3-4 camshaft locks, the J42069-1 Timing Belt Alignment Kit and the J42069-2.
Important: Do not rotate the crankshaft if the camshafts are not locked in place with the 1-2 and 3-4 camshaft locks (J42069-1 and J42069-2).
Important: Do not rotate the camshafts unless the crankshaft is at 60 degrees BTDC or the valves may contact the crankshaft.
Loosen the tensioner pulley.
Remove the timing belt.

Procedure
- Remove valve timing housing > Chapter.
- To turn crankshaft, reinstall bearing bush, crankshaft pulley -2- and crankshaft bolt -3- and securely tighten crankshaft bolt (use counterhold 3415).
- Remove spark plug from No. 1 cylinder. Use puller -T10094 A- and spark plug wrench 3122 B.
- Screw dial gauge adapter -T10170- into spark plug hole to stop.
- Screw dial gauge -VAS 6079- and extension -T10170/1- in to stop and lock in position with lock nut -arrow-.
- Turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation, to TDC No. 1 cylinder. Note position of small needle on dial gauge.
- Then turn crankshaft back 45° opposite direction of engine rotation.
- Press tensioning guide rail -1- in direction of arrow and lock piston with locking pin -T40011-.
- Mark direction of rotation of timing chain -3- using felt-tip marker.
- Remove bolts -2- and remove camshaft sprocket -1- with timing chain -3-. Counterhold using counterhold tool -T10172-.
- Renew bolts -2-. Tighten bolt -2- to 50 Nm (use counterhold -T10172-).
- Turn inlet and exhaust camshafts until camshaft clamp -T10171- can be pushed into holes in camshaft to stop.
Locking pins -arrows 1- must engage in holes -arrows 2-. Inscription "TOP"-arrow 3- must be readable from above.
Note
Camshafts must not be pushed axially whilst turning.
- Install a M6 bolt -arrow- hand-tight (do not tighten) to secure camshaft clamp -T10171-.
- Remove camshaft sprocket bolts. It is absolutely necessary to use counterhold tool -T10172- for this.
Note
Camshaft clamp -T10171- must not be used as a counterhold tool.
- Remove one camshaft sprocket.
- Place timing chain over camshaft sprockets, observing chain direction of rotation, and install camshaft sprocket again.
- Tighten camshaft bolts until camshaft sprockets can still just be turned on camshafts.
- Tension timing chain by removing locking pin -T40011-.
- Turn crankshaft in engine direction of rotation to TDC No. 1 cylinder. Permissible deviation from TDC No. 1 cylinder: ±0.01 mm.
Note
If crankshaft is turned more than 0.01 mm past TDC, then turn crankshaft back 45° against engine direction of rotation. Then turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation to TDC No. 1 cylinder.
- Hold camshaft sprockets -1- and -4- in this position with counterhold -T10172- then tighten bolts -2- to 50 Nm.
Note
Crankshaft must not move and timing chain -3- must remain tensioned on both sides when tightening camshaft bolts.
- Remove camshaft clamp -T10171-.
- Turn crankshaft two rotations in direction of engine rotation to TDC No. 1 cylinder. Permissible deviation from TDC No. 1 cylinder: ±0.01 mm.
- Insert camshaft clamp -T10171- to stop in camshaft openings.
If camshaft clamp -T10171- cannot be fitted
- Repeat adjustment.
If camshaft clamp -T10171- can be fitted
- Remove camshaft clamp -T10171-, hold camshaft sprockets with counterhold tool -T10172- and tighten bolts -2- a 1/4 turn (90°) further with a rigid wrench.
Note
Camshaft sprockets must not move on camshaft whilst tightening.
- Turn crankshaft two rotations again, in engine direction of rotation, to TDC No. 1 cylinder. Permissible deviation from TDC No. 1 cylinder: ±0.01 mm.
- Insert camshaft clamp -T10171- to stop in camshaft openings.
If camshaft clamp -T10171- cannot be fitted
- Repeat adjustment.
Further assembly is basically the reverse of the dismantling procedure. In the process, note the following:
t Installing valve timing housing > Chapter.
t Installing poly V-belt > Chapter.
t Renew oil seals for camshaft sealing cover and oil them before fitting.

Dual Mass Flywheel, and will also need new clutch Remove the engine coverUsing a [16 mm], rotate the tensioner arm clockwise (about 14° )and remove the belt from the pulley.
Remove the power steering pump pulley, idler pulley, tensioner pulley and crankshaft pulley.
Remove the upper and lower timing belt covers.

Remove the auto tensioner.
NOTE
Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and align the timing mark to set the No.1 cylinder's piston to TDC (compression stroke).
At this time, the timing marks of the camshaft sprocket and cylinder head cover should coincide with each other.




Unbolt the tensioner to remove the timing belt.
NOTE
If you plan to use the timing belt again, mark the rotation direction on the belt so you reinstall it correctly.

INSTALLATION
Install the idler pulley to water pump boss.
NOTE
Insert and install the idler pulley to the roll pin that is pressed in the water pump boss.


Install the tensioner arm and plain washer to the cylinder block.
Install the tensioner pulley to the tensioner arm.
Install the camshaft sprockets and align the timing marks.

NOTE
When installing the camshaft sprockets, fasten them tightly while holding the hexagonal part of the camshaft.
Before installing the timing belt, if the timing marks of the cam sprocket and the cylinder head cover do not coincide, do not rotate the cam sprocket more than 3 teeth in either direction.
Rotating the sprocket more than 3 teeth may allow the valve and piston to touch each other.
If the cam sprocket is rotated more than 3 teeth unavoidably, rotate the crankshaft counter - clock wise a bit before rotating the cam sprocket.
Install the auto tensioner to the front case.
NOTE
At this time auto tensioner's set pin should be compressed and secured with set pin.




Align the timing marks of each sprocket and install the timing belt in the following order. Crankshaft sprocket--> Idler pulley--> camshaft sprocket (LH side)--> Water pump pulley--> camshaft sprocket (RH side)--> Tensioner pulley.
NOTE
In this step, No. 1 cylinder is in the TDC (Compression stroke).
Be very careful if you use your fingers.



Pull out the set pin of the auto tensioner.



Install the upper and lower timing belt covers.
Install the power steering pump pulley, idler pulley, tensioner pulley and crankshaft pulley.
Using the wrench [16mm], rotate the tensioner arm clockwise (about 14°) and install the belt to the pulley.
Install the engine cover.
How to adjust the tension of the timing belt
Rotate the crankshaft 2 turns clockwise and measure the projected length of the auto tensioner at TDC (# 1 Compression stroke) after 5 minutes.
The projected length should be 6-8 mm.
Verify that the timing marks of each sprocket are in their specified position.
NOTE
If the timing marks are not in their specified position, repeat from 6 above.

The 2.0L engine is an interference motor. Extending the replacement interval could lead to the belt breaking and severe and costly engine damage. Care must be taken if rotating the crankshaft or camshafts with the belt off, if resistance is felt, do not force them to turn.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the timing belt covers as outlined in this Section.
  3. Remove the valve cover.
  4. Place Camshaft Alignment Timing Tool T94P-6256-CH or equivalent, into the slots of both camshafts at the rear of the cylinder head to lock the camshafts into position. NOTE: If the special tool is unavailable, a suitable length and width straight edge can be used to align the camshafts.
  5. Loosen the camshaft timing belt tensioner pulley retaining bolt and move the tensioner pulley to relieve the tension on the timing belt.
  6. Temporarily tighten the tensioner in this position. NOTE: If the timing belt is to be reused, mark the belt for the direction of rotation before removing to prevent premature wear or failure.
  7. Remove the timing belt.
  8. If required, remove the sprockets as follows:
    1. Hold the camshaft with an appropriate camshaft sprocket holding tool.
    2. Loosen and remove the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt.
    3. Remove the sprocket from the camshaft.
    4. Repeat the procedure for the 2nd camshaft sprocket.
    5. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
  9. Slide the crankshaft sprocket onto the crankshaft aligning the key-way.
  10. Align the camshafts using the Camshaft Alignment Timing Tool T94P-6256-CH. NOTE: If the special tool is unavailable, a suitable length and width straight edge can be used to align the camshafts.
  11. Reinstall the sprockets onto the camshafts and loosely install the camshaft retaining bolts.
  12. Tighten the camshaft sprocket retaining bolts to 47–53 ft. lbs. (64–72 Nm) .
  13. Loosely install the crankshaft pulley to verify that the engine is at TDC. Realign the marks if they have moved.
  14. Verify that the camshafts are aligned. NOTE: It is recommended to purchase a tensioner spring and retaining bolt through the dealer parts to apply the proper tension for used or new belt installations. The spring is bolted to the tensioner assembly and becomes a part of the engine. Ignore this notice if the tensioner spring is already installed.
  15. Reinstall the retaining bolt (W700001-S309) into the hole provided in the cylinder block and place the tensioner spring (6L277) between the bolt and the camshaft timing belt tensioner pulley.
  16. Tighten the retainer bolt to 71–97 inch lbs. (8–11 Nm) .
  17. Remove the crankshaft pulley and install the timing belt onto the crankshaft sprocket, then onto the camshaft sprockets working in a counterclockwise direction.
  18. Tighten the camshaft sprocket retaining bolts to 47–53 ft. lbs. (64–72 Nm) .
  19. Be sure that the span of the camshaft timing belt between the crankshaft sprocket and the exhaust camshaft sprocket is not loose.
  20. Be sure that the camshaft timing belt is securely aligned on all sprockets.
  21. Reinstall the lower timing belt cover and tighten the retaining bolts to 53–71 inch lbs. (6–8 Nm) .
  22. Apply silicone sealer to the key-way of the crankshaft pulley and install. Tighten the retaining bolt to 81–89 ft. lbs. (110–120 Nm) .
  23. Inspect the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley to verify that the engine is still at TDC.
  24. Loosen the camshaft timing belt tensioner pulley retaining bolt and allow the tensioner spring attached to the pulley to draw the tensioner pulley against the camshaft timing belt.
  25. Remove the camshaft alignment timing tool from the camshafts at the rear of the engine.
  26. Turn the crankshaft two revolutions in a clockwise direction.
  27. Tighten the camshaft timing belt tensioner pulley retaining bolt to 26–30 ft. lbs. (35–40 Nm) .
  28. Recheck that the crankshaft timing mark is at TDC for the No. 1 piston, and that both camshafts are in alignment using the camshaft alignment timing tool. NOTE: A slight adjustment of the camshafts to allow the insertion of the camshaft alignment timing tool is permissible as long as the crankshaft stays at the TDC location.
  29. An appropriate camshaft sprocket holding tool can be used to move the camshaft sprocket (s) if a slight adjustment is required.
  30. If a camshaft is not properly aligned, perform the following procedure:
    1. Loosen the retaining bolt securing the sprocket to the camshaft while holding the camshaft sprocket from turning with the sprocket holding tool.
    2. Turn the camshaft until the camshaft alignment timing tool can be installed.
    3. Verify that the crankshaft timing mark is at TDC for the No. 1 cylinder.
    4. While holding the camshaft sprocket with the camshaft sprocket holding tool, tighten the retaining bolt to 47–53 ft. lbs. (64–72 Nm) .
    5. Remove the tool and rotate the crankshaft two revolutions (clockwise) .
    6. Verify that the camshafts are aligned and that the crankshaft is at TDC for the No. 1 cylinder.
  31. Install the valve cover.
  32. Install the timing belt covers.

CAMSHAFT TIMING INSPECTION
  1. Locate and carefully remove the access plug from the upper portion of the timing cover. WARNING
    When turning the engine over by hand, ALWAYS rotate the crankshaft in the proper direction of rotation, otherwise the timing belt might jump one or more teeth due to the configuration of the belt tensioner.
  2. Turn the engine CLOCKWISE (in the normal direction of rotation) to set the engine at Top Dead Center (TDC) of the No. 1 cylinder by aligning the O mark on the belt cover with the O mark on the crankshaft pulley. NOTE: If no timing mark is visible through the access cover when the O marks on the crank pulley and cover are aligned, the engine may be on No. 1 exhaust stroke and not the compression stroke (the camshaft is 180°away from No. 1 TDC). If so, the crankshaft must be rotated one full turn to bring the No. 1 piston back to the top and the camshaft around to close the No. 1 intake and exhaust valves.
  3. With the O marks aligned, look through the access hole in the cover to confirm that the timing mark on the camshaft sprocket aligns with the pointer on the inner belt cover. If the belt timing is incorrect, the timing cover and belt must be removed for further inspection, possible replacement and correct installation. For more details, please refer to Section 3 of this manual.
  4. If timing is correct, re-install the access plug. prev.gif next.gif

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the timing belt covers.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft and align the timing marks located on the camshaft pulleys and the seal plate.
  4. Remove the crankshaft pulley and hub.
  5. If the timing belt is to be reused, mark an arrow on the belt to indicate its rotational direction to enable correct re-installation.
  6. Loosen the timing belt tensioner lockbolt and remove the timing belt.
To install:
  1. Temporarily secure the timing belt tensioner in the far left position with the spring fully extended, then tighten the lockbolt.
  2. Make sure the timing marks on the timing belt pulley (crankshaft sprocket) and the engine block (oil pump housing) are aligned.
  3. Make sure the timing marks on the camshaft pulleys and the seal plate are aligned.
  4. Install the timing belt.
  5. Loosen the tensioner lockbolt. Using a suitable prying tool, position the timing belt tensioner so the timing belt is taut, then tighten the tensioner lockbolt.
  6. Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise and align the timing belt pulley mark with the mark on the engine block.

If the timing marks are not aligned, remove the belt and repeat the procedure.

Loosen the tensioner lockbolt. Using a suitable prying tool, position the timing belt tensioner so the timing belt is taut, then tighten the tensioner lockbolt.
Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise and align the timing belt pulley mark with the mark on the engine block.

Need a timing scamatic for a 1998 ford contour 16v Zetec ct 2.0l


Installation
All Vehicles
  1. NOTE: Rotate the crankshaft clockwise.
    Rotate the crankshaft to TDC on cylinder No. 1.

NOTE: Cylinders No. 1 and No. 4 are at TDC when the Woodruff key points straight up.
Remove the blanking plug, completely screw in the special tool and auto-align the crankshaft to TDC.

  1. Position cylinder No. 4 to valves overlap" and install the special tool.
  2. Hold the camshafts by the hexagon using an open-ended wrench and turn them in the direction of engine rotation.
  3. Slide the special tool onto the ends of both camshafts.

  1. NOTE: Incorrect timing belt tension will cause incorrect valve timing.
  2. Pre tension the timing belt.
  3. Rotate the tensioner locating tab counterclockwise and insert the locating tab into the slot in the rear timing cover.
  4. Position the hex key slot in the tensioner adjusting washer to the 4 o'clock position.
  5. Tighten the attaching bold enough to seat the tensioner firmly against the rear timing cover, but still allow the tensioner adjusting washer to be rotated using a 6mm hex key.

CAUTION: Tension the timing belt, working counterclockwise. Using the hex key, rotate the adjusting washer counterclockwise until the notch in the pointer is centered over the index line on the locating tab (the pointer will move clockwise during adjustment).

While holding the adjusting washer in position, tighten the bolt
NOTE: Hold the intake timing belt pulley with special tool to stop it from turning.
Tighten the timing belt pulleys.
  1. Tighten the intake camshaft timing belt pulley bolt.
  2. NOTE: Hold the exhaust camshaft by the hexagon with an open-ended wrench to stop it from turning.
    Tighten the exhaust camshaft timing belt pulley bolt.
  3. Remove the special tool.
    • Install the blanking plug.
  4. Remove the special tool.
  5. NOTE: Hold the camshaft by the hexagon with an open-ended wrench to stop it from turning.
    Tighten the exhaust camshaft to stage 2.
    1. NOTE: Turn the crankshaft two revolutions in the normal direction of rotation.
      Check the valve timing by inserting the special tool. Correct it, if necessary.
      • Screw in special tool 303-574 and make sure that the crankshaft is touching it.
      • Insert special tool 303-465 into the camshafts; if necessary loosen the timing pulleys and correct the camshaft alignment.
      • Detach the special tools.
    1. NOTE: Use a new blanking plug.
      Install the blanking plug on the exhaust camshaft pulley.

Hyundai Sonata Timing belt replacment



1.Align the timing marks of the camshaft sprockets (on the front and rear sides) and the crankshaft sprocket (At the top dead center position of the No.1 cylinder compression stroke.)
2.Route the timing belt on the crankshaft sprocket, then onto the rear camshaft sprocket.
3.Run the timing belt onto the water pump pulley, the front
camshaft sprocket and the timing belt tensioner.
4.Apply force counterclockwise to the rear camshaft sprocket with tension on the tight side of the belt, check that the timing marks are all aligned.
5.Install the flange.
6.Back off the fixing bolts of the temporarily tightened tensioner one or two turns and tighten the timing belt with the tensioner spring force specified.
7.Using the special tool (09231-33100), turn the crankshaft two turns in the normal rotating direction (clockwise).
NOTE
Turn smoothly, only in a clockwise direction.
8. Readjust the sprocket timing marks and re-tighten the tensioner locking bolts.
9. Measure the belt tension with a belt tension gauge as shown in
the illustration.
Tension force . . . . . . . . . . . . . 260-380 N (57-84 Ibs.)

Position the hooks in the tooth bottoms and apply the spindle to the back of the belt.
10. As the mounting bolts of the timing cover are different in size according to location, be sure to locate them .
