The band on the 4L60 E applies in 2nd & 4th (not reverse). The sun shell is the most common failure when you loose reverse in the 4L60E but you will also loose 2nd & 4th. It is possible that the rev clutch is also distressed. May also have some valve body issues

You will need to replace it and youll need to go to a shop and have them look at it and tell you which tranny you need.thats the best way to find out

The reverse band is most likely broken it will either need a rebuild or a replacement. The transmission is a 4L60-E

I logged into GM and the 4L60-E is the only transmission available in your van.

See if you can get the bands tightened and see if that solves the problem before committin to a new transmission. Thats everybody's solution if something happens to transmission. They shout new when it could be the TCM or ECM or output or input speed sensor. In today's world, everything is computerized on a vehicle and one little thing can mess your whole vehicle up. Do an OBD 2 scan and see what codes come up.

Bands are easily replaced there is a special tool to go in and attach a band
but first thing i would check would be tranny leaks this would make the torque converter loose and not roll properly
now if bands were broke you wouldnt get drive either

The reverse bands in the 4L60-E are common to break I had mine brake and was lucky enough to be able to drive 450kms home on it without needing reverse. If it was a torque converter or fluid issue it would be a common problem in all drive gears. However it still drives forward I would take it to a tranny shop that provides free estimates to be sure.

My chevy astro van shakes when i slow own. and now

Sounds like your bands are locking up and sticking.
This is usually caused by worn bands or very dirty transmission fluid. the cheap fix is to change your transmission fluid and filter. If that doesn't fix the problem, your forward bands or servo may be worn out, which will require a rebuild.

Looking for location of bcm on 97 astro van dash

The BCM is located immediately above the heater controls inside the dash on my 2004 Astro. I know it controls the headlights and locks but not gauges. Haynes says the gauge fuse supplies it power....but I'm not going to bank on that one.
