Question about 2000 Chevrolet Venture

1 Answer

Lights will not turn off

I have a 2000 Chevy Venture and yesterday the brake light and the traction off light came on and are staying on. What could be the cause of this and can it be fixed without taking it to a shop for the repair. Also the fuel guage is not working - it stays on full all of the time. Is this an easy fix or does this require a mechanic to fix?

The light problems is probably going to be the brake light switch located above the brake pedal and costs about 35.00 to replace. as far as the fuel guage its probably a stuck float and if its bad its in the tank and would have to be dealt with by a mechanic.

Why does my traction off light come on?

You either have a problem with your engine control system, the traction control system, or you are not in the correct gear. See the explaination below. This is from the 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier Owner's Manual.

TRAC-OFF LIGHT

... If you turn the system off by moving the shift lever

to FIRST (1) or SECOND (2), the warning light will

come on and stay on. To turn the system back on,

move the shift lever back to a position other than

FIRST (1) or SECOND (2). The warning light

should go off. (See "Enhanced Traction System"

in the Index for more information.)

The warning light will come on when you set your

parking brake with the engine running, and it will

stay on if your parking brake doesn't release fully.

If the transaxle shift lever is in any position other

than FIRST (1) or SECOND (2) and the warning

light stays on after your parking brake is fully

released, it means there's a problem with the system.

If the traction control system is affected by an

engine-related problem, the system will turn off

and the warning light will come on.

If the Enhanced Traction System warning light comes

on and stays on for an extended period of time when the

transaxle shift lever is in any position other than FIRST
(1) or SECOND (2) your vehicle needs service.

Had this exact problem in my shop yesterday. Turned out the connector on the speed sensor on the rear differential was broken allowing it to pull out of the sensor. Cleaned out inside the connectors and tied them together with a pull tie. Problem solved.

1999 Chevy Venture airbag light stays lit

You need to replace the airbag clockspring. It is located inside the steering column and is fairly easy to do for the home mechanic. Be sure to disable the air bag system!! You can find this part that any parts store, for about $100.
