Question about Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

On a 91 Grand Am 2.3, it backfires, and #2 spark plug is stuck. I tuned it about 2.5 years ago. I installed a K&N air filter and Rapid Fire plugs, I applied anti-seize to the plug threads. Any ideas?

Many times when you experience backfireing the problem is with the timing.Have someone check this if you are unable to do it yourself.

Why does my 03 grand cherokee with new pump and filter try to start but only backfires?

back fire is symptom of timing set up wrong , the plugs or fuel aren't synchronising so sparking to late and sending power on the exhaust stroke , needs a tune up no big deal

Tune up

You need to study or research info on tune-ups
Basically it is a sales pitch, as only spark plugs are left
& tune-ups stopped 25 years ago from a technical perspective
Your not actually tuning anything
You replacing old spark plugs, gas & air filter etc, that has been
called preventative maintenance for over 20 years
For the last 30 years the vehicles Computer does all the
engine tuning

Normal tune-up, includes?

YEARS AGO A NORMAL TUNE UP WOULD BE SPARK PLUGS, WIRES, ROTOR, CAP

NOW DAY SHOULD BE THE SAME THING BUT THEY ONLY REOLACE THE PLUGS AND WIRES THAT ARE SHOWN TO BE BAD OR WEAK THRU THE DIAGNOSTICS EVERY REPAIR SHOP IS NOT THE SAME
WITH THE TUNE UP THEY SHOULD REPLACE THE FUEL FILTER AND AIR FILTER, DEPENDS ON WHAT THE DIAGNOSTICS MACHINE SHOWS

What all you have to do for a tune up on a 1998 pontiac grand am and about how much should you pay for this?

Fuel filter, PVC, Spark plugs, & plug wires if 50,000 miles or better on the old ones. Check air filter and all fluids. Cost will vary in the area you live in

What parts are exchange in a tune-up for a 2001 grand caravan with 164000miles?

Tune up is a very vague word. But I would suggest, replacing spark plugs, wires, Clean throttle body, replace air andf fuel filters, check drive belt.

Van hesitates and sometimes backfires when

i would like to tell you to pull a spark plug and see what's going there....you may see a spark plug that's all burnt up or a different color then the rest..extremely different...due to either, pre-ignition or detonation...in that case replace the plugs, with the proper heat range spark plugs, i highly recommend a factory plug to avoid any issues with the heat range or anything else. If problem still persists, then it may be a fuel issue.. a system that is too lean, getting less fuel and more air, will cause a back fire, as the oxygen in your combustion chamber will ignite very quickly and stay lit through out the strokes and when the valve opens, it back fires..so try a tune up first because then you will know for sure if an injector is bad, whether its firing right, or not at all...if problem still persists, then have your mechanic perform a fuel pressure test and if there is a significant drop in pressure, could be regulator or pump...just to try cheap first? replace the fuel filter and air filter...it might be due to a lack of fuel reaching the engine..if all checks out well, then it could be a worn timing chain, or burnt valves, or timing chain

Won't start

The first thing i would do is put a new ignition control module on it. If that doesnt fix it, some of the newer model vehicles have made it so the power control module (pcm or brain) has to be reset everytime you change the battery. I hope that helps you out.

2003 Ford Ranger starts hard.

That sounds like it could be one of many things. Have you ever given the truck a tune up? I suggest the following things first.

New Air Filter
New Spark Plugs
New Plug Wires
Oil Change (and filter)

These are the basic necessities of an engine. Having a dirty air filter, or plugs that are firing weak can surely cause this problem. Try giving the truck a good old tune up and see how it starts then.
