look for loose rubbers on shockies, suspension points sway bar points , front and rear , check for loose muffler rubbers or faulty cat converter rattling inside , check for loose rocks under the heat shielding around the exhaust system.
finding noises is hard work and is ART. get help. 1;: is it the dash it self, press on it, doe that stop of change pitch of sound. no? 2: i must be something inside. use a cheap rubber hose to your ear. and move hose all over dash underneath to find the true source. you never said under what conditions, it rattles. parked (rats/mice....), idling,, moving, or only bumps in road. or only during earth quakes, (LOL)
It may be that a guide for the steering shaft itself is worn and this could well seem to be in the dash board since the first sleeve in which the steering shaft is held is somewhat under the dashboard.
The rattle may be stabilizer link rod bushings or a strut mount loosening up as for the engine light you must hook up a code reader to determine the problem otherwise you may be replacing parts blindly.
It's a loose steering column. Remove the black plastic shield under the steering wheel. Lossen the bolt that holds the two shafts together, slide them together as far as they'll go, and re-tighten the bolt. It's that simple... to stop that annoying rattle.
