I now have about 100,000 miles on the car and have the same idle problem. In addition, when the idle goes below 500 the lights dim and the battery has been drained a few times while just sitting.

You may have to take your car to any AutoZone or similar store and have your engine scanned for a code. It can be a variety of sensors or valves.

Why is there a gas smell?

It may be fuel evaporation. If it is coming from the tank or the engine the high temperature outside and from a working engine may be evaporationf the fuel befor it can be used. You will smell it at idle, or when stationary because the vehiccle is not moving and is surrounded by the atomised fuel, when your vehicle is moving it will be dispursed by your passage through air.

Ford transit van has spongy brake pedal

FORD Technical Service Bulletin PERCEIVED EXCESSIVE PEDAL TRAVEL MAY BE FELT WHILST VEHICLE IS STATIONARY AND ENGINE IS AT IDLE. IF A CONSTANT FORCE IS APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL IN THE CONDITIONS ABOVE, THE BRAKE PEDAL MOVES SLOWLY TOWARDS THE FLOOR. THIS IS NOT A FAULT BUT IS A CHARACTERISTIC OF A TANDEM BOOSTER. NO PARTS REQUIRE CHANGING DUE TO THIS BEHAVIOR

Wipers won't work when stationary at lights only

The wipers on that vehicle work with vacuum, if the vacuum is low, (which it would be sitting at an idle) then the wipers will slow or even stop,, try reving the motor just a little to see if that improves the problem, if it does, Lube the mechanical portions of the wiper assembly ,,

What transmission problem can cause a slight pull when stopping?

If you mean when the vehicle is supposed to be standing stationary, a slight inclination ot move forwards on a level road is normal in an automatic. If the pull is excessive, the simplest thing is to reduce the idle speed slightly. If this does not answer your question, please give us a little more clarification on what you mean.

Should i change from 4 to 2 wheel drive whilst stationary or if im moving how long should it take to disingauge

The best method is to be stationary when changing. When done stationary the disengaugement usually happens without delay. If you are moving when changing take your foot off the throttle and it should disengauge.
