1985 Ford F150 Fuel System Question

I have a 1985 Ford F-150, 302 V8 with fuel injection. The truck will start right up, but will only run for 10-15 seconds. I have replaced the fuel filter and this did not solve the problem. How do I determine if this is a fuel pump issue (which one and how to replace it) or an electronic fuel control problem?

Sounds like a fuel pump to me. You'll first need to check fuel pressure. auto part stores have fuel pressure gauges for sale for 20-30 dollars. Hook it to the car and watch the gauge at idle then when you rev it up. If it drops below like 35psi it's faulty. I bet this is your problem

HI
I had the same problem. After taking the MAF sensor off and cleaning it, it was still there... I ended up changing the throttle position sensor and all was well. It cost about 23 bucks..You can try this first.

    IF IT DOESNT WORK
the fuel pump is probably located in the fuel tank which presents accessability issues. some can be accessed from a plate in the trunk floor, others require dropping the fuel tank, a major pain in the ****..good LUCK

Is there a fuel cutoff switch on a 1985 ford truck?

There should be a cut-off switch on any electric fuel injection engine made by Ford Motor group. Just title a Web search with your year and model car and add inertia switch location. Many of the early designs were in the trunk and later moved to the front floor kick-panels.

I have a 2001 ford f150 5.4 v8. I shut it off and when I tried to restart the truck it would crank over fine but not start. starter turns fine and there's plenty of fuel. Truck ran fine prior to failing...

Check fuel injection. Could be a fuse or module. Also check to see if fully in park or in neutral.
Most likely electrical side of ignition. Since plugs, cap and wires are out of the way, it is most likely in the fuse panel.

1985 F-150 will not start.

Stupid and lucky? Not usually my m.o. but this time it is. I had to prime the fuel system. Turn the key on (not start, just on), turn the key off, repeat a dozen times or so, start. The thing started on the first crank. First time getting in depth with fuel injection so I will just think of it as a learning curve.

Exhaust smoke at start up

It means that the system is running rich, in other words too much fuel.

Try checking your air filter--make sure it is not dirty. Also check for a plugged air intake hose. Enough air is not getting into your cylinders for the proper air-fuel ratio.

If it has carb, the carb float is too high or sunk.
