2003 Saturn Vue V6 2WD catalytic converter problem

My Saturn recently lost a lot of power and when I took it to the Saturn dealer they told me that the catalytic converts where very clogged and needed replacing. They said that there were 3 of them, but I can only find one type when searching online for after market parts.

How many are there on this model and do you have any sites with a drawing or a recommended after market place to purchase them?

Also, can the converters be cleaned if they are clogged or do they have to be replaced?

The price difference is huge. $2300 vs. about $1000 for the after market ones. Have you seen this yourself or know of someone that has tried the after market ones for a Vue? Thanks for the quick response and I would love to hear about your experience with these.

I am sorry but the delaer is correct, there are 3, and the bad news is the after market cats won't work, the check engine light will come on if you use them and for that reason you will fail smog tests, the issue is how much they flow and the way they work is not compatable with the programming of the powertrain control module, stick with the factory cats, I know they are expensive but in the end you will have to buy them.

There is a ceramic grid that is inside the converter shell, it breaks up and plugs the system, then the broken pieces get into the rest of the exhaust, did they check your muffler? in any event no they can't be cleaned or reused.

I'm currently dealing with the EXACT same issue with my 2003 Saturn VUE V6. While it was under warranty, I had numerous problems with my VUE (and still do) and Saturn replaced all 3 of them at their cost. (There is NO logical reason that a Single Exhaust V6 system needs 3 CC's. NONE!) Almost 2 years later, I'm having the EXACT same problem again, and now Saturn has gone under and won't honor the year left on my warranty. What a crock of ****! I'm not going to spend $1600 Labor ($$$) to have these USELESS things installed. For $1600 , I could put a down payment on a MUCH better vehicle from a company that actually backs it's warranties and isn't going to close a year or two from now, like Honda or Kia.

On your Saturn Vue V6.
Use 2 Catalytic One for Each Bank ( Head) Bank1 and Bank 2.
And one small Called in some places Ressonator.
some times is nessesary to replace all of them.

Ok.. Online you will find only one, Because they are the same for both sides.
I recomend take the car to a Muffler place.
They will have on stock, and you will have Warranty in all the Work.

They can clean the Catalytic But you will have the Check Engine light on. with the code P0430 and P0420, .
But go to the muffler place and take a second Advice with them.

I hope this help on your problem..
Thank you for use fixya....

Saturn vue will start but will only stay runnuing about twenty minutes then stalls wont start

Does the car loose power before stalling or does it simply die without warning? If it loses power first, you're likely looking at a fuel pump or fuel system problem. If it just dies, you probably have an ignition problem. Does the check engine light come on before it dies?

When I try to start my 2003 saturn vue the key is hard to turn unless I push brake very hard and turn the steering wheel. What's the problem?

My 2004 Saturn Vue had the same problem. I thought the ignition had to be changed and I drove the Vue a long time with the key hard to turn and pushing it in before turning it. I mentioned it to a Saturn Dealer mechanic while having warranty work done. He told me a new key had to be made using the key code (located on the inside panel on the driver door). They made it and it totally fixed the problem. I think any GM dealer can do that for you.

Check eng light with code po431 replased ox/sensors

P0431 is Warm Up Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2). What is happening is this....the O2 sensor downstream of the Catalytic Converter is detecting the Converter is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to your cars specifications). 3 main causes of this is 1.) Defective O2 Sensor (which in your case elminates this one) 2.) Catalytic Converter is no longer functioning properly. or 3.) There is an exhaust leak. You will not notice any driveablitiy problems, however, you may get a rough/hard idle when its cold out. I would take your car to an exhaust shop and have them do a free exhaust system inspection. Alot of places like Midas/Mieneke Car Center/Monroe Muffler to name a few do these checks for free. Thanks for Using FixYa!
