Question about 1999 Porsche Boxster

1 Answer

Digital Speedometer is out...

Greetings, I recently bought a 1999 Boxster... the car is in GREAT condition except that the digital speedometer ( and temp and whatever else) is out. I know that it is working because when the sun hits it just right I can see the speed and temp displays changing... I think that there must be a bulb out behind it. The "Trip" and "Time" displays on either side work fine. Is there a way to tell if it is a bulb? Do I have to replace the whole dash? Thanks! Keith

There is a back-light bulb, pull the cluster out to replace it, it may be a special high lum bulb so check with the dealer for the correct bulb part number or look it up on the web.

My speedometer works but my digital odometer does not work on my 2003 old alero

This is one guy's advice: Replace the speedo head, that should take care of the problem."

This site is also interesting because the guy said
General Motors cars had instrument cluster problems from 2003 through 2006. When I researched instrument cluster problems on the Internet what I found raised concerns in me. Many of those vehicles had problems that began with the instrument cluster, but eventually led to the engine refusing to start.
(an electronic instrument cluster, digital instrument panel or digital dash for short, is a set of instrumentation, including the speedometer, that is displayed with a digital readout rather than with the traditional analog gauges. Many refer to it simply as a digital speedometer.)

All the gauges seem to work except the speedometer

On my 1999 Cirrus the speedometer would work sometimes and other times not. Now not at all. The cruise control always works though. I have a shop manual and found that the instrument cluster has self diagnostics. Press in the digital odometer button and hold it. Then turn the ignition on without starting. The needles will then move to different positions, then each indicator light will come on one at a time. If the speedometer needle doesn't move during diagnostics, then you need to replace the circuit board that attaches to the back of the cluster. You can order one for just over $200 at

Outside Temperature display

If you do not have the On-board computer (option M659), you can still get the outside temperature display to work. All the electronics of the On-board computer are included in every Boxster (except some early 1997 models did not have the temperature sensor installed), but if you don't order the option, you don't get the stalk on the steering column to choose which feature to display. The On-board computer functionality displays below the digital speedometer readout underneath the tachometer.
To activate the temperature display, you will need the Porsche System Tester 2 computer to tell the car that it possesses the On-board computer, even though it doesn't. Since you probably don't have this $4000 device, but your Porsche service department does, this will require a visit to your dealer. It will take about five minutes of your service department's time, but you should call ahead. Some service departments will charge for the service.
Using the Porsche System Tester 2, follow these steps:
  1. Go under the "instruments" heading
  2. Go to "modify coding"
  3. Specify "with On-Board Computer"
  4. Press the F8 key to commit the changes

Speedometer on 1999 Ford F-150 works intermittently.

I'm thinking that you're refering to the green digital odometer? It's a common problem. My 99 F150 does it. There are some bad soldered connections on the back of the instrument panel. Go to this website at for more info:
