Question about 1997 Toyota Avalon

1 Answer

Lurching at low speed take off

My 1997 Toyota Avalon has developed a lurching, ie. when accelerating at low speeds, slowly the car starts bucking which clears upon reaching 20 mph or increasing acceleration. Any ideas what this could be. I'm thinking the start of bad transmission or fuel pump. Fuel filter has been changed recently.

I would start by cleaning the inside of the Mass Air Flow sensor, dirt gets on the sensor element from the air going through and causes these kinds of problems, a company called CRC makes the spray cleaner for MAF's, any good auto parts store will have it, the MAF is located in the air intake hose to the engine. Another thing to check is the throttle valve and air bypass idle speed control valve for sludge, use the following procedure I have written to perform this.
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

I have a 2005 Toyota Avalon with 280k miles. Just started to feel a vibration when accelerating. Only when I press the accelerator at any speed. Any ideas?

Could be anything from a bad tire to bad bearing to bad cv axle to trans issues to engine issues. Not enough info for a better guess.

- stumbles when stopped and accelerating at low speeds

ENGINE HESITATES WHILE ACCELERATION
LOSS OF ACCELERATION

It can be fuel pressure issue or it's the problem with accelerator pedal or its clogged filters causing there.
There are many other possibilities. I suggest you to go through the list of help links mentioned below, these will help you to confirm where the actual fault lies: -------

Unknown Engine Problems, 1997 Toyota Avalon

Hello, and thanks for choosing FixYa for assistance.

Before I would consider anything else, I would take your vehicle to a competant repair facility and get the automatic transmission fluid completely flushed. This may be all that your problem is.
