Question about 1999 Jeep Cherokee

We have used 1999 Jeep GCL. Key will not turn, nor can be removed. Purchased a used steering column @ salvage yard. Vehicle is at a repair shop. He replaced the steering column, started car, it runs for a few seconds and shuts down. Icon on dash - a circle with a slash through it lights up. Thinking it is a security issue having something to do with the computer?? They are researching this??? If is computer, can it be reset, etc. Help please. I don't want to be taken to the cleaners. You know the fuel pressure regulator could cause your vehicle to shut off after a few sec but then you should be able to start it a few secs later then it will do the same thing..computers can be reset unless they are burnt out..

This to me sounds like your problem also check the "PCM BATTERY" fuse under the hood in the power distribution block. This vehicle requires that you use the key matching the computer, or have a key made programmed by the dealer to match your VIN# SENTRY KEY IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM The Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS) indicator lamp gives an indication when the SKIS is faulty or when the vehicle has been immobilized due to the use of an invalid ignition key. The lamp is controlled by the instrument cluster circuitry based upon messages received from the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) on the Chrysler Collision Detection (CCD) data bus.
The SKIM sends messages to the instrument cluster to turn the lamp on for about three seconds when the ignition switch is turned to the On position as a bulb test. After completion of the bulb test, the SKIM sends bus messages to keep the lamp off for a duration of about one second. Then the SKIM sends messages to the instrument cluster circuitry to turn the lamp on or off based upon the results of the SKIS self-tests. If the SKIS indicator lamp comes on and stays on after the bulb test, it indicates that the SKIM has detected a system malfunction and/or that the SKIS has become inoperative.
If the SKIM detects an invalid key when the ignition switch is turned to the On position, it sends messages to the instrument cluster to flash the SKIS indicator lamp. The SKIM can also send messages to the instrument cluster to flash the lamp and to generate a single audible chime tone. These functions serve as an indication to the customer that the SKIS has been placed in its "Customer Learn" programming mode. See Sentry Key Immobilizer System Transponder Programming in this group for more information on the "Customer Learn" programming mode.
The SKIS indicator lamp uses a replaceable incandescent bulb and bulb holder on the instrument cluster electronic circuit board. Refer to Instrument Panel Systems for diagnosis and service of a faulty SKIS indicator lamp. If the SKIS indicator lamp comes on and stays on after the bulb test function, diagnosis of the SKIS should be performed with a DRB scan tool and the proper Diagnostic Procedures manual.

instead of fixing the broken column go to local salvage yard and replace the entire column it should take you about 2 hours to replace it not even that. it is too much of a hassle to fix a broken part in the column itself and the repair will not always help out in the long run.

Replace ignition switch on 99 jeep wrangler

The ignition key must be in the key cylinder for cylinder removal. The key cylinder must be removed first before removing ignition switch.REMOVAL 1. Disconnect negative battery cable at battery. 2. If equipped with an automatic transmission, place shifter in PARK position. 3. Rotate key to ON position.4. A release tang is located on bottom of key cylinder.5. Position a small screwdriver or pin punch into tang access hole on bottom of steering column lower cover.INSTALLATION 1. If equipped with an automatic transmission, place shifter in PARK position. 2. Position key cylinder into steering column as it would normally be in the ON position. 3. Press key cylinder into column until it snaps into position. 4. Check mechanical operation of switch. Automatic Transmission: Be sure transmission lever is locked in PARK position after key removal. If key is difficult to rotate or is difficult to remove, the shift lever-to-steering column cable may be out of adjustment or defective. If key can be removed, release lever mechanism may be defective. Release lever mechanism is not serviced separately. If repair is necessary, the steering column must be replaced. 5. How to start 1990 s10 chey truck with a key


There really isn't a user friendly way of doing this that doesn't involve removing the key cylinder and using a screw driver to turn the ignition switch. Is there any of the key sticking out of the switch at all? If so you might be able to extract it with a pair of needle nose pliers. Any good key tech at lowes or walmart should be able to make you a new key.

The other method is to remove the key cylinder by removing the steering column cover. It should only take a phillips and a regular screw driver to accomplish this. You can usually get a replacement key cylinder with a new key at a salvage yard...though they might want you to buy the whole steering column. In a 90's model truck though, they may not even have them any more.....

I have a 2000 fordwindstar. The left front head light is not working. I already replaced the light bulb. Still not working. You have any Ideas?

This is likely not in the bulb itself but in what they call the "multi function switch" or you may know as the turn signal switch. Relatively easy to change and you should be able to find one at any local salvage yard. I am a repair before replace kind of guy. Don't waste your time. It wont work. New around $100, used around $25 - $45 depending on the salvage yard. I usually do not disconnect the battery cable either so be very careful around ANY yellow electrical harness and do not touch. They are usually labeled as well. Here are the instructions for replacement.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
  3. Remove the two self-tapping screws retaining the multifunction switch to the steering column tube.
  4. Remove the multifunction switch.
  5. Label and disconnect the electrical harnesses.

To install:
  1. Connect the electrical harnesses.
  2. Align the multifunction switch mounting holes with the corresponding holes in the steering column tube casting. Install the two self-tapping screws, making sure to start screws in the previously tapped holes. Tighten the screws to 17-26 ft. lbs. (2-3 Nm).
  3. Install the upper and lower steering column shrouds. Tighten the screws to 7-9 inch lbs. (0.7-1.1 Nm).
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

My buick was stolen and i need to find out how i can get my steering coloum fixed. they broke it by the blinker? what do i need to do or were do i go to get it fixed?

Your most cost effective repair would be a used steering column from a salvage yard... any Quality body shop or Mechanic shop can install it .
Most insurance company's on theft and recovery vehicles goes the route of a used column and a has a body shop do the repairs because of the labor rates are much cheaper then a mechanic shop . but remember due your research on a good quality repair facility and us the BBB to verify.

92 Jeep Cherokee Attempted Theft. The left side of the steering column is smashed. I start the vehicle now with a screwdriver. Can i get individual parts for inside the steering column?

yes,but it would be less costly and time saving to just replace the whole steering column from a salvage yard,but make sure it comes with keys.

How do I find tilt steering maual and parts

tilt steering manual is in the service manual, parts are from dealer, or salvage yard. As many jeeps got turned in under the "Clunker Bill' the salvage yards have a lot of these. I'm not bad mouthing Jeep, theres just a lot of them and I would buy a salvage yard column, they should be numerous and cheap.

if it was me i would go to a good salvage yard and get my hands on a good one and replace the whole column and take it by a lock smith with my key and have it rekey try this website to find a good salvage yard near you and what i do when i am working on something sometime is go by the library and checkout a Haynes auto repair manual for the car i am working on also try these websites and best of luck Michigan man.

if it was me I would go to a salvage yard and get another steering column drop it off at a lock with your key from the old one so they can match that key to the other ignition switch

OK! I know this one well! Now the key sticking problem, I am not sure about, that is not the big issue, until you get it running. If you have an extra key, (I HOPE!) put it in the driver side door and lock and unlock it at least 5 times. That will reset the security system, and take it out of lock down. It will run then, and probably give you your key back.
