Question about 2000 Nissan Maxima

Service engine soon, SLIP, TC OFF LIGHTS ON

Had rubber boots drive shafts replaced, new front brake calipers replaced, front rotors turned, new tie rods on front end. Now Service engine light comes on at the same time as SLIP and TC off. If I turn ignition off and then back on SLIP & TC off goes away but Service engine light still on. Car runs great otherwise.

    I have a new Hyundai I20 Automatic just had its first service 1500K comming back fully laden four adults! acellerated to overtake engine reved to about 4000revs with clutch slipping

I had the same indications on My 2000 Maxima but the engine was also running rough . I replaced the number 3 cylinder ignition module and all of the spark plugs and all of the error lights are back to normal I had to reset the check engine light by disconnecting the battery for about 15 minutes.By the way my car has 253,000 miles on it so if you have a lot of miles on your car you might want to check all of the ignition modules so pull your spark plugs and read them they might tell you where your problem is .

Removing front brake rotors, removed caliper, n center nut to pull off rotor but wouldnt remove,is there something i am missing?


U Shouldnt have to remove the "center nut," that's the nut that holds the drive shaft in. I hope you have a book as it is set to a specific torq. Now sometimes depending how old the rotors are you might find it helpful to knock around the edges with a hammer. If your reusing use a rubber mallet. But your tacking them off so I'm guessing your replacing. So beat em off. There just stuck on. Also you might have to remove the caliper mount bracket. Not to sure if 06 has this. But the rotor has to slip on and off straight and a caliper mount bracket can keep you from doing this. good luck!

How to remove brake rotor


  1. Loosen but do not remove lug nuts on wheel
  2. Jack vehicle up (make sure you are on level ground and the vehicle is stable)
  3. Locate and remove the bolts that hold the caliper.(the caliper has a rubber brakeline attached to it)
  4. Remove caliper leaving rubber brake hose attached (may be necessary to pry and do not let the caliper hang by that hose)
Now it gets tricky because I dont know what kind of car it is. Some cars you can just slide the rotor off from this point. Others you have to remove a screw or bolt in the rotor to remove, some you have to take the bust cap off and remove nut. It really varies by type of vehicle.

Front brake
Step 1: Identify Front Disc Brake Components

Front Wheel Drive Brake Assembly
Most front disc brake components include: brake rotor, brake pads, brake caliper, caliper mount and brake flex hose. Brake service usual occurs between 20,000 and 40,000 miles depending on driver habits, road conditions and brake pad/ rotor materials used.
Step 2: Remove Brake Caliper to Replace Pads

Removing Brake Caliper Mounting Bolts
Locate primary caliper mounting bolts; apply wrench pressure counter-clockwise (When looking at the head of the bolt) to remove the bolts, upper and lower. Make sure the bolt threads are in good shape and replace if necessary.
Step 3: Remove Front Brake Caliper

After removing the primary caliper mounting bolts lift the brake caliper off of the rotor and then tie or secure to the side, being careful not to bend or kink the brake caliper flex hose. Thoroughly inspect brake caliper and brake hoses for leakage, cracks or chaffing and replace as needed. Next remove the brake pads (If not mounted in the caliper) and secondary caliper mounting bolts. Notice how great protective gloves work, most technicians use them on the job today.
Step 4: Remove Brake Pads

Once the brake pads have been removed, make sure if there is anti rattle hardware to transfer to the new brake pads. Some brake pad manufacturers will include the proper lube (Caliper slides) and anti-rattle hardware to ensure proper performance of their product.
Step 5: Remove Caliper Mount

Finish removing secondary caliper mount bolts and remove caliper mount. Note: clean and lube caliper slides and pad friction surfaces of all foreign material or build-up.
Step 6: Remove Brake Rotor

With the caliper mount out of the way you can now remove the brake rotor. Sometimes it can get stuck so you may need to tap it with a hammer or use penetrating oil to free it up. Some manufacturers use small screws to hold the rotor on as well. Clean and inspect wheel studs, replace if any are damaged. Also clean bearing hub rotor mount surface to ensure the proper mounting of the new brake rotor. Inspect the ABS sensor wheel for cracks or damage and replace as needed.
Step 7: Depressing the Brake Caliper

Resetting Brake Caliper
To install the new brake pads you must retract the brake caliper piston. Remove the master cylinder lid or open the brake caliper bleeder screw to allow excess brake fluid to be released if necessary. Install C clamp tool and gently tighten clamp until caliper piston is fully depressed. Note: use old brake pad to protect the caliper piston. Close the bleeders once the piston is retracted completely
Step 8: Installing New Brake Rotor

Install new brake rotor, the new rotor is manufactured with a protective film over the rotor to keep it from rusting, remove protective film with brake cleaner before installing; also after the brake job is complete you may experience a small amount of smoke from the rotor when first used. This is normal and will go away after the first couple of uses.
Step 9: Installing New Front Brake Pads

Reinstall the front brake caliper mount, and then install front brake pads. Make sure the pads are seated properly in the caliper mount; it must be a close fit to work properly..
Step 10: Reinstall Front Brake Caliper

Re-Install front Bake Caliper
Reinstall front brake caliper and reinstall caliper-mounting bolts, recheck all mounts and mounting bolts. Check the caliper slides to be sure there is no bind and that the caliper moves freely back and forth on the caliper slides. Bleed brake system per manufacturer's specifications to relieve any air trapped in the system. Before driving the vehicle, push the brake pedal down and let it up slowly, repeat until normal brake pedal operation resumes, this operation is forcing the brake pads to travel to the brake rotors.

Replace disc pads procudure


They are actually pretty simple, but check or replace the rotors before you install new pads. The front discs have 2 bolts per caliper as do the rears. There are hardware clips that are different on the front and rear.

You unbolt the caliper and tie it up with a rope or coat hanger so the caliper does not hang by the brake hose. Service the rotors and then when you are ready to replace the caliper, you take off the master cylinder cover. Then you use a "C" clamp to drive the caliper piston flush into the caliper. Doing this will force Brake fluid back into the Master cylinder. This is why the Master cylinder cap must be off. Attach the brake pads with a chemical to eliminate rattles and then slide the loaded caliper over the rotor. Attach the 2 bolts on the caliper and then you are ready to bleed the system.

Repeat this on each wheel and then bleed all 4 wheels. There will be very little air in the system using this method. The back brakes have the E-Brakes inside the rotors. If you pull off the rear rotors you will have to loosen the E-brakes by turning the Starwheel inside the rotor to allow for more clearance. Adjust the same Starwheels by tightening until independent wheel drags substantially, then loosen up 5 or more clicks on the Starwheel.

The calipers will take care of themselves and center themselves through use. Thats about all I can say about this process. I hope this helps you.

How to remove brake rotors on a 1996 ford explorer


How to replace the rear brake pads on a 1995 through 2001 Ford Explorer The system utilizes a drum-in-hat type rear brake rotor. The integral drum allows the use of a drum-and-shoe type parking brake system. All other components are similar to their front disc brake components Remove the two bolts on either side of the brake hose with the rubber boots. Do not remove the four bolts where the axle ties in. The two bolts to be removed require a 10mm socket/wrench. Loosen the pads from the caliper Rotor Removal In order to take the rotors off (replace with new or have them machined), it is best to loosen the emergency brake shoes. To do this, behind the rotors, in the back there is a rubber plug, remove that and you can use a screw driver to engage the teeth of the adjusting screw, turn it clockwise to loosen, usually 10-20 teeth. Usually this means turn it downward. After this, it may still be difficult to get the rotors off without tapping them. Use a rubber mallet and hit them from behind. Before really whacking the rotor, make sure you have loosened the adjusting screw enough. It may take heavy swings of the rubber hammer to do this. It will eventually break loose. Parking Brake You might want to check the parking brake while you are here. To remove:
  • Remove the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Remove the outboard return spring.
  • Remove the adjusting screw spring.
  • Remove the rear brake shoe hold-down spring and pin.
  • Remove the brake shoe adjusting screw and nut.
  • Remove the front brake shoe hold-down spring and pin.
  • Remove both parking brake shoes and the inboard return spring.
  • Check the parking brake lever for excessive wear and replace as necessary.
To install:
  • Position the front parking brake shoe to the backing plate and install the hold-down pin and spring.
  • Install the rear parking brake shoe with the inboard return spring.
  • Position the brake shoe adjuster screw and nut on the shoes and install the rear shoe hold-down pin and spring.
  • Install the brake shoe adjuster spring.
  • Install the outboard return spring.
  • Adjust the parking brake shoes and install the rotor, caliper and wheel.
  • Lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
ADJUSTMENT
  • Measure the inside of the drum portion of the rear brake rotor
  • Remove the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Using Brake Adjustment Gauge D81L-1103-A or equivalent, measure the inside diameter of the drum portion of the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Subtract 0.020 in. (0.508mm) from the first measurement, adjust the brake shoes to that size
  • Adjust the parking brake adjuster screw until the outside diameter of the parking brake shoes measures 0.020 in. (0.508mm) less than the drum measurement.
  • Install the rear disc brake rotor.
Reassembly Reassembly is easy. Put new or machined rotors back on by sliding them over the lugs (they should slide on easily.) Loosen bleeder valve (having a catch bottle handy is good). Push calipers in slowly (using a c-clamp or large channel lock pliers), close bleeder valve. Put on pads. Lubricate metal clips with small amount of anti-seize. Re-adjust the emergency brake by turning the opposite direction from loosening. Refill the brake master cylinder

How to change CV joint mazda 323 mod 1991


In order to change the cv joint, you will need to remove the wheel and the brake caliper and rotor. Raise vehicle on jack stands. Remove the wheel and remove the brake pads and caliper. Tie the caliper up out of the way, do not disconnect the brake line attached. Once the caliper is removed, slide the rotor off. Using the correct size socket, remove the nut in center of hub. Some vehicles have a kotter pin in the shaft just in front of nut. If so, remove pin before nut. Next, you will need to loosen a few bolts that hold the strut to the hub assembly. Once you have hub free from strut, turn the hub either left or right while having someone push in on the cv joint while turning joint left or right. Doing so will allow the joint to slide out of hub. Next, using a pry bar, insert between end of transaxle and transmission and pry out. To install new axle, align the axle with transmission and slide into transmission. Carefully work the other end of axle into the center of the hub assembly. Once you have it in the hub, tap gently with a rubber mallet until you hear it "pop" into transmission. Once it is in transmission, replace the bolts connecting the hub to strut. Replace nut on center or cv joint and tighten just until it seats against the hub...do not overtighten. Replace kotter pin with new pin. Slide the rotor over the studs, replace caliper and brake pads, install wheel and you are done.

All new brake shoes on 97 jeep front callibers still sticking


The problem lays with the Caliper itself and/or the brake hose connected to the Caliper.
However if you replaced the pads, did you also replace the Rotors or have them Turned? The old pads wear the rotor. New pads on old rotors that have not been replaced or turned may end with rubbing or stuck brakes.
A simple way to test whether it's one and/or the other:
1. Remove the Caliper from the rotor, remove the pads. Keep for now the caliper attached to the brake hose.
2. Very slowly push on the brake, exposing more of the piston out of the bore. Not all the way. Usually until the rubber dust seal/boot is fully extended.
3. Check the seal/boot for cracks and tears, and if clean or not. Bad seals may prevent the piston from re-seating.
4. Using a c-clamp and pushing straight in: Try repushing the Caliper Piston back into the Caliper Bore (the cup back into the hole). It should go back in realitively easy.
5. If it doesn't go back in easy: Again slowly pump the brake and re-push the pistons back out to full extended seal/boot (but not the piston out of the bore).
6. Detached the brake hose from the caliper.
7. Again using a c-clamp and pushing straight in: Try again to repush the caliper piston back into the bore without the hose attached. If it goes back-in relatively easy - the caliper is okay...it is the brake hose.
8. If the caliper piston does not go back in easily - Replace the caliper.
9. When Installing the new (reman) caliper, remember to bleed the brakes.
TRY EITHER OR #10 OR #11 BELOW:
After the new Caliper is reattached to hose and has been bled:
10. Again push on the brake petal to fully extend the caliper piston fully (rubber seal/boot fully extended) Again do not push the piston out of the bore! Try pushing the piston back into the bore. If it does not re-seat relatively easy: Replace the brake hose.
11. Another method: After replacing the new caliper back on the rotor: Assumng the entire front end (2WD front wheel drive) or entire vehicle (2WD rear wheel drive) or (4WD all the time) is jacked up off the ground
a. Put the lug nuts back on the rotor.
b. Have helper Start the vehicle and place in Drive. Don't step on gas!
c. Have then let off the brake and then engage the brake.
d. When they let off the brake watch to see if the Rotor is turning or not, if rubbing or not. Or if still sticking.
e. With a new caliper, turned or new rotors, and still a problem? It is the brake hose!
12. Replace the brake hose and try again.

Another method but more expensive:
OR Replace the calipers, brake hoses; bleed and test!

I have a bad wheel bearing how do I replace it


Hub and Bearing Assembly
ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Do not begin this removal procedure unless the following parts are available:
  • A new front axle wheel hub retainer (3B477) (Step 1).
  • A new inboard halfshaft joint stub shaft circlip.
Once removed, these parts must not be reused during assembly. Their torque holding ability or retention capability is diminished during removal.

Removal
  1. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position and place the steering column in the unlock position.
  1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Discard the front axle wheel hub retainer. It is a torque prevailing design and cannot be reused. If loosened, the retainer must be removed and a new one installed.
    Remove and discard front axle wheel hub retainer (3B477).
  1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  1. NOTE: Make sure steering column is in the unlocked position, and do not use a hammer to separate tie rod end (3A130) from the front wheel knuckle (3K185) . Use extreme care not to damage boot seal.

    Remove cotter pin from tie rod end stud and remove slotted nut. Discard cotter pin and nut.
  1. Using Tie Rod End Remover 211-001 (TOOL-3290-D) or equivalent and Tie Rod End Remover Adapter 211-087 (T81P-3504-W), remove tie rod end from front wheel knuckle.
  1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Use extreme care not to damage boot seal. Do not use power tools to remove the nut, or bearing and seal damage will result. Loosen the nut first, then remove nut from stud using the hex hold feature.
    For SHO vehicles, remove vinyl cover from upper link stud.
    Remove stabilizer bar link (5K484) from front shock absorber (18124) .
  1. Remove disc brake caliper (2B120) and support with wire to obtain working space. Do not allow disc brake caliper to separate from the front disc brake caliper anchor plate (2B292) to prevent contamination of the disc brake guide pin journals. Do not allow disc brake caliper to hang from front brake hose (2078) . Remove front disc brake rotor (1125) . Remove front disc brake rotor from wheel hub (1104) by pulling it off the lug bolt (1107). If front disc brake rotor is difficult to remove from front wheel knuckle , strike front disc brake rotor sharply between lug bolt with a rubber or plastic hammer.
    If front disc brake rotor will not pull off, apply Rust Penetrant and Inhibitor D7AZ-19A501-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C56-A to inboard and outboard rotor/hub mating surfaces. Install 3-Jaw Puller 205-D027 (D80L-1013-A) or equivalent and remove front disc brake rotor by pulling on front disc brake rotor outside diameter and pushing on hub center. If excessive force is required for removal, check front disc brake rotor for lateral runout prior to installation. Refer to Section 06-00.
  1. Remove anti-lock brake sensor mounting bolt and front brake anti-lock sensor (2C204) .
  1. Remove and discard lower ball joint nut. Using Remover Adapter 211-211 (T96P-3010-A1), separate lower ball joint from front suspension lower arm (3078) .
  1. Using Rotunda Spring Compressor 014-00781 or equivalent, compress front coil spring (5310) until lower ball joint clears front suspension lower arm .
  1. Using Front Hub Remover/Replacer 204-069 (T81P-1104-C), Two Stud Adapter 205-237 (T86P-1104-A1), Metric Hub Remover Adapter 204-085 (T83P-1104-BH) and Front Hub Installer 204-067 (T81P-1104-A), press front wheel driveshaft joint (3B414) from wheel hub . Wire front wheel driveshaft joint to body to maintain a level position.

  1. Remove and discard three hub and bearing retainer bolts from front wheel knuckle .
  1. NOTE: Wheel hub is not pressed into front wheel knuckle . Do not use slide hammer to remove a stuck wheel hub . Do not strike back of inner bearing race. Use of these methods will damage bearing internal parts.

    NOTE: If bearing carrier is corroded to front wheel knuckle , apply Rust Penetrant and Inhibitor D7AZ-19A501-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C56-A to the inboard and outboard wheel hub/knuckle mating surface and allow to soak.

    Remove wheel hub from front wheel knuckle .

Installation
  1. NOTE: If wheel hub is damaged or if any end play is detectable, replace wheel hub . End play is not adjustable. If wheel hub is disassembled, the assembly must be replaced.

    Remove all foreign material from knuckle bearing bore for correct seating of new wheel hub.
  1. Lightly lubricate mating surfaces of bearing corner and front wheel knuckle.
  1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Knuckle bore must be clean enough to allow wheel hub to be completely seated by hand. Do not press or draw wheel hub into place.
    Position wheel hub in front wheel knuckle . Install three new hub and bearing retaining bolts. Tighten to 83-107 Nm (61-78 lb-ft).
  1. Push front wheel driveshaft joint into wheel hub . Hand start front wheel hub retainer.
  1. Slowly release Rotunda Spring Compressor 014-00781 or equivalent while guiding lower ball joint into front suspension lower arm .
  1. Install new lower ball joint nut. Tighten to 68-92 Nm (50-67 lb-ft).
  1. Install tie rod end into front wheel knuckle . Install new slotted nut and tighten to 47-63 Nm (35-46 lb-ft). If necessary advance nut to install a new cotter pin.
  1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Use extreme care not to damage boot seal. Do not use power tools to tighten nut or bearing and seal damage will result. Install nut using hex hold feature to prevent the stud from rotating.
    Install stabilizer bar link to front shock absorber . Install stabilizer bar link nut. Tighten to 77-103 Nm (57-75 lb-ft). For SHO vehicles, install stud cover.
  1. NOTE: Remove rust from the rotor and hub mating surfaces with a medium abrasive pad.

    Install front disc brake rotor and disc brake caliper . Tighten caliper anchor bracket bolts to 88-118 Nm (65-87 lb-ft).
  1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: The front axle wheel hub retainer must be tightened to specification immediately during installation. If the retainer is not tightened immediately, the nylon lock will set incorrectly, leading to incorrect torque readings and bearing failure. Any front wheel hub retainer that is not immediately tightened to specification or is loosened must be removed and a new retainer installed.
    Install front axle wheel hub retainer . Tighten to 230-275 Nm (170-203 lb-ft).
  1. Install wheel and tire. Tighten lug nuts (1012) to 115-142 Nm (85-104 lb-ft).
  1. Lower vehicle.
  1. Pump brake pedal prior to moving vehicle to position brake linings.
