Question about 1997 Saturn SL

1 Answer

I was driving normally at about 55 on the way home when all of a sudden my car died at the stop sign. I then started it back up but I can not get my car into gear now. It runs fine but I can't get the car into gear it seems like the clutch is really loose, but what is my problem???

Shifter cables need to be replaced. I think the dealer charges about 400 dollars to do this but if your mechanically inclined the aftermarket part cost 80 dollars

Where did you buy the alternator? Charge the battery and have them both tested.

Not the alternator, but a fuel pump or fuel filter could be the problem. BUT it depends on the indications. A fuel starvation problem would act like it was lunging and then dieing out before it died. If it just dies out suddenly, then I would suspect an electrical problem like a coil pack or cap.

Needs tuning. Also replace fuel and air filters. If that doesn't help then it may need piston ring replacement.

maybe your fuel pump stop working or a blown fuse for the fuel pump or ignition coil. First checked for blown fuses

No! If you can start it right back up I seriously doubt it but you do ablsolutely need to change fuel filters every 15,000 miles and forget about oil changes they do nothing for the car. But a plugged fuel filter will kill a fuel pump and average cost of a gob like that here in Seattle is around $500-700.
But you need to find that leak and fix it you can be loosing enough fuel pressure through that leak to cause a problem like yours.
Please rate me as a fixya! Thank you Randy

Cavalier dies

you need to find the fuel pressure release around the fuel rail press the little tab when the car dies. If there is no fuel coming out from that point, your fuel pump is going.
