SOURCE: lifter making noise

The hydraulic lifters depend on small channels that can get clogged. Had lifters replaced and tap remained. Decided not to spend hundreds more once audi mechanic discovered the fix (reopen head and **** oil channel). Changing oil and filter frequently helps quiet the lifter.

Have a 2009 Yukon 5.3 motor it has a lifter tick at startup sometimes really loud sometimes not is there a service bulletin. It has AFM lifters I think that has something to do with it.

I have cured just a few using a real AC Delco filter and synthetic 5w-30 oil. GM recommends using only 5w-30 oil in your engine because other weights can cause air to get into the lifters during start up and cause lifter noise.

How do you repair lifter

you can try doing an oil system flush and oil change as sometimes a little dirt may cause a lifter problem. if this doesn`t help then checking the oil pressure may show if you have low oil pressure. if this is good then you may just have a worn lifter. replace all lifters and inspect the cam lobes for wear, as you don`t say how many miles are on the motor.

My son has a 1994 Buick Skylark that is experiencing a ticking with lifters. How difficult are these to replace?..Does the head have to be removed to replace them?..Thanks

What engine?

If its a 3.1 liter try this first.

Get a can of Seafoam Motor Tune which is usually available anywhere that sells auto parts and sometimes walmart or target will also carry it in there automotive section.

With the engine cold and shut off add 1/2 of the bottle to the oil. Start the engine and let run until warm or until the lifter noise has gone away. If the lifter noise stops have the oil changed and add the other half of the bottle to the clean oil. If the noise does not stop it is not a lifter noise and lilley something more severe.

I have never had seafoam not fix this complaint on any GM V-6 or V-8!

What would make my lifters tap while ideling at a red light ? sometimes the tap is loud and sometimes you hardly hear it.

It sounds like tired hydralic lifters to me. If the noise was constant it would be a worn out oil pump instead

How to stop lifter and or vavle noise in car motor?

Generally if it's being caused by wear you can replace what's worn...rocker arm, lifter , cam etc. If noise just began, sometimes an additive like marvel oil will clean out the lifter and make it quiet, but it takes time...It took time to get that way.Lucas additive sometimes also works for that. But, as I said, if it's from wear you need to replace the worn parts.

Lifter making noise

depends, how long between oil changes, how many miles, try and engine flush, sometimes debrise adn sludge will cause a lifter to stick and not move freely causing the tapping noise you hear, if this doesn't fix or quiet the problem it may be to far gone, but if you really love the car get a tear down manual and go to work....put aside a weekend and about 500 dollars it'll be a job
