Overheating Is there a way to diagnose the problem? Not sure if it is the fan, thermostat, or water pump

    I have the same overheating problem then I tried to fix it myself first I check the engine oil level to make sure the engine has enough oil then I check the radiator coolant level make sure the radiator fill with anti freeze coolant and then I check the fan to make sure the relay of the fan works properly and I found out the relay fan was the problem so I decided it to connect the fan directly to the battery with switch without relay and the problem solved.

You have one low speed fan relay and 2 high speed fan relays. I suspect the low speed relay is bad.

Connie, Were the radiator,water pump and thermostat replaced to try and fix the over heat issue or as maintenance. Engine overheating can be caused by a lot of things, Leak in cooling system, air in system, bad rad. cap, slipping belt, faulty thermostat or installed upside down, faulty water pump, plugged radiator (inside/outside), collapsing rad hose, faulty cooling fan, leaking head gasket, sludge plugging engine water passages, poorly tuned engine, etc..
Take into a good shop for diagnoses and estimate for repair. Check the attached links,instruction and guides, Good luck

Overheating problem


overheating sound like faulty thermostat.thermostat either sticking close or could have blown headgasket if you see a lot of white smoke coming out of exhaust.if headgasket is leaking check engine oil should look milky.also check water pump look around weep hole or see coolant leaking around water pump replace water pump.also check water pump drive belt.make sure drive belt not loose slipping.

Overheating...coolent is full. everything is fine think its the thermastat. DOnt know how to fix?


There are any number of things which can cause/contribute to an engine overheating. Some of them:
1. Thermostat stuck closed
2. Restriction/clog in the system (hoses, radiator)
3. Blown headgasket
4. Cracked head/block
5. Water pump not pumping
6. Water pump pully/belt
7. Cooling fan not fanning/turning
8. Restricted airflow through radiator vanes

Have a qualified/certified Hyundai Service Technician properly diagnose this issue

You say "Water pump thermostat" do you mean Thermostat or water pump? If you replaced the thermostat and still have an overheating problem then look at the water pump itself as the problem if that is replaced and you still have the problem then you have another problem in the engine or a clogged radiator core. You may have a lubrication problem in the motor, if the oil pump went out or your low on oil then the engine may be overheating from lack of lubrication. Another thing that will cause overheating is if the Fan is Electric and not activating or if the radiator fan is mechanical the clutch is not allowing the fan to rotate free when you are driving.

It is possible that the pump failed because of an overheating problem. Make sure the fans run by turning on the air conditioning. They should operate as soon as it is turned on. Bad fans are a common problem. The pump should not have been leaking after replacement though. Make sure you have no leaks first and foremost. Then make sure the fans work. There is also a fan control module located in the area under the battery, but it is difficult to properly diagnose. If the fans do not turn on with the a/c, you can jump the wires at the thermo switch. One should be power, and when you jump to one wire they should go to low speed, the other high.

My kia is over heating


most likely a stuck thermostat if cooling system is in good condition. Also make sure fan belt is still attached. Its possible it could of broke.

Overheating


The thermostat is behind the upper radiator hose...remove the upper radiator hose and loosen and then remove the two bolts on the outlet (where the upper radiator hose ends) The thermostat is inside that outlet...Another thing to check is if there is water in the oil...If there is water in the oil then it could have a head gasket problem..Did you ever replace the thermostat? If it is stuck then it would also cause overheating...Excessive exhaust backpressure because of a clogged catalytic converter could also cause overheating..Also check belt tension and condition. A loose belt that slips may prevent the water pump from circulating coolant fast enough and/or the fan from turning fast for proper cooling...Another thing it could be is a faulty Water pump -- Any wobble in the pump shaft or seepage would call for replacement. In some instances, a pump can cause an engine to overheat if the impeller vanes are badly eroded due to corrosion or if the impeller has come loose from the shaft. The wrong pump may also cause an engine to overheat. Some engines with serpentine drive belts require a special water pump that turns in the opposite direction of those used on the same engine with ordinary V-belts... Also check the Fan -- With mechanical fans, most overheating problems are caused by a faulty fan clutch, though a missing fan shroud can reduce the fan's cooling effectiveness by as much as 50% (depending on the fan's distance from the radiator) which may be enough to cause the engine to overheat in hot weather or when working hard.

Overheating problem


If the fans are electric fans, check or replace the fan electrical circuit and fan relay.

If fan is driven off the water pump, through a clutch, replace the clutch. Just because it turns, does not mean it has failed.
