I have a 1997 Ford F 150 with the dial that engages the 4x4, it does not go into 4x4 but i can hear it click and the lights come on the dash, saying it is in 4x4.

I'll assume that you have a 4x4 switch on the dash; check the shifting motor and plug on the transfer case, or the digital output from the GEM module which controls the 4x4 operation.

What is the differential and does it need flushed?

I dont think you have one. If you car is front wheel drive, you do not have one. It's the rear wheel drive gear box and should get new fluid every 50 or 60K.

Four wheel drive stays engaged

Is your battery light on the dash on? When my alternator died, my hubs were auto locking due to low voltage in the 4wd selector even though 2wd was selected. The problem corrected itself when I installed a new alternator.

I put new lock outs in my F-250 but when I turn to 4 wheel drive it still don't won't work thank you

there should b a vacume module on the passenge side of the axle housing. check to see if you have vacume to and from that module when 4x4 is engaged if you have vacume coming out of it check it at wheel bearing. if you have vacume there the problem is the o ring by the lockers.

Need to know where the vacume line is for the 4 wheel drive

This is the block diagram, so you can trace them out, it is not an actual picture of the vacuum lines. Once you find the vacuum box, and the IWE ( Integrated Wheel Ends ) solenoid, the remainder should be easy to find.

Quick test is to pull the vacuum lines ( not the vent lines ) at the IWE, and plug the end of them. While you are there, check that the vent lines are not blocked. When you pull the vacuum lines off the IWE, the front hubs will lock into place ( in 2WD, pushing a dead axle ), so you should be able to turn the switch ( ESOF ) or move the lever to 2H ( MSOF ) and the 4WD should work, if it is not a transfer case issue.

Front tires wont engage in four wheel drive

if the actuateor is vacumed, you might have have a hose that came off or it has a split in it somewhere, check that.or if you have posilock hubs one or both may be wore out or lacking grease, they are easy to remove, just a hex wrench and snapring pliers is all you need, remove and inspect for obvious sighns of wear.

Four wheel won't engage

Theres a vacume dash pot under the battery box. It pulls a cable that engages the front diff. Put the vacume line and you'll have lights and four wheel drive. (it happened to my blazzer)
