Question about 2003 Kia Sorento

1 Answer

Overheating When I'm driving up or down a hill the temperature gauge goes past midway. I have the a/c off and turn the fan and the temperature gauge goes past midway. Is this a fan or a belt? Nothing shows as a problem when it checks on the computer. The Catalitic Converter, the radiator, the temperature gauge, and the hoses have been replaced.

When I say the temperature gauge goes past midway, I should have said the gauge will stay above midway and past 3/4. If the gauge was digital it would be at 75-90 percent and fluxuate.

I did replace the thermostat. The gauge still rises past midway.

Have you changed the thermostat, has the radiator been pulled to inspect for blocked core passages?

If it only goes just past half scale on the guage don't worry about it.

After highway driving for 2 hours and stopping for gas the car would initially start and then stall, it would run again until the car cooled for 30 minutes.

Sounds like your coolant level might be low. At highway speed you probably have enough coolant and with the air passing thru the radiator keeps the temp down, but at idle not so much. Or depending whether you have a belt drive or electric fan. Belt driven, could need a new belt.

At first my 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme (only has 59,000 miles) after driving for a while the temperature gauge would start to rise when idling but when I started driving the temperature would go back...

This sounds more like the thermostat is not opening as it should, instead of an ECM problem.

With the indications you state - goes down when heater activated - goes down when moving, that is what I would have checked first, not the cooling fan!

I took my 99 dodge grand caravan to advanced auto and got a computer readout of p1491 as the error code. is this important and is this expensive?

P1491 is Radiator Fan Control Relay Circuit. MEANING: An open or shorted condition detected in the low speed radiator fan control circuit.
Some questions for you:
1. Is your Caravan overheating?
2. Is your Caravan water temperature spiking going past the midway point on the Temp Gauge before the radiator is engaged?
3. Is your Rad Fan coming-on and then turning off and back-on in a very short period of time (like under a minute?
If all of these are "No" then do not worry about it.

2000 Elantra Overheating

First when vehicle is cold like in the morning check and make sure that the vehicle has enough coolant/ antifreeze in radiator and reservoir. If coolant is need use a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze. You will need some time to do this let car run at idle until the temp guage is in the middle NOT+ normal operating temperature. At this point if the thermostat should be in the open position. Let vehicle run and check to make sure that radiator fan comes on. This should come on when guage is about midway/half way. If temperature rises above half going to h/hot and fan doesn't come on, you either have a BAD FAN BAD FAN SWITCH BAD FAN RELAY OR BLOWN FAN SWITCH FUSE. You will need to check all of the following I will help if its needed. If fan comes on and doesn't go off and vehicle continues to get hot even with fan running. Feel radiator hoses and see if the lower radiator hose is cool/cold. If it is you have thermostat that stuck closed. Replace thermostat and fix problem. If all the above is good and vehicle continues to over heat. THE BAD NEW IS THAT YOU MAY HAVE A BLOWN HEAD GASKET /CRACKED HEAD /BROKEN WATER JACKET. Basically you will need a HEAD JOB at least a head gasket. ONe tell tail sign of this is oil looking like milkshake/chocolate milk-a creamish while residue in oil or antifreeze. Contact if you need hel0p. Good Luck and thanks for using FIX YA
