It just turns over and back fires but will not run . there is fuel getting to the cylinders and there is a good spark . it was running fine then parked it up for a week or so now having this problem . please help many thanks jim
Give the battery a full charge....un clip the air filter housing and leave it resting in place, put your foot to the floor on the gas pedal and keep cranking til it starts up,dont release the ignition key til it fires up,it will pop and bang and then when it fires up will smoke for a little bit (couple of mins) and then it will be fine.
If that doesnt work you will have to remove all 8 plugs,clean them,pour about 2 teaspoons in each cylinder before replacing plugs then do the same as above.
What happens with these engines is the cylinders get a bit too much fuel in them and it washes the oil away down the bores thus losing comression so it wont start.Instead of starting it up and switching it off briefly,let it run a bit and then give it a little rev before switching off...hope this helps

You need 3 basic things to make an engine run. 1 Compression, 2 Fuel, 3 Spark. So start buy checking for spark, remove a spark plug and plug it back into the wire. Now touch the threads of the spark plug to metal ( a good ground on the engine) and then turn the engine over (try to start it) and see if you have spark? No spark find the problem. If you have spark now see if you have fuel getting to the engine. You can try pouring a little fuel into the carb or throttle body and then see if the engine will fire or try to run. If it tries to run or fires you have a fuel problem. You need to find out why it is not getting fuel. Spark or fuel, 90% of the time are the main causes when an engine will not run. This is a simple engine to work on. Check for compression in the dead cylinder. If low or none, you found your problem....likely burnt exhaust valve.
If compression good, check injector for fuel spay or fuel delivery head for fuel delivery. With engine idling, crack each line nut at the fuel distributor and see if any fuel squirts out.
If so, check spark delivery by pulling lead to dead cylinder and install used/spare spark plug into plug lead. lay this against engine and run engine watching for spark at plug tip. Do not touch the plug or wire while engine running.
If no spark, check distributor cap for cracks inside. The electronics are primative on these so the above should get you close to the reason cylinder is not firing.
well first off you want to make sure your getting fuel and if you are getting fuel then check the pressure to make sure it is were it should be you can rent them from autozone for free it got a deposit but you get it back when you return it . if fuel is good check your spark pull out spark plug have someone try to start car look at the plug if you have bright blue spark in all your plugs spark is fine if orangeish color spark change ignition rotor and distibutor cap and wires you might as well do it all if spark and gas are both good
check crankshaft postion sensor as hard starts and on most cars if there bad they wont start also check camshaft position sensor they both tell your cars pc when to fire spark and to what cylinder to fire it to
I'd start with one of these and move on to the next.
Is it getting fuel? You should have an "in tank" electric fuel pump. When you turn the key halfway (just before turning the engine/starter over), you should hear the fuel pump prime. Easy way to check is to look in the throttle body while someone turns the key to the "on" position. You should see/smell the fuel. You can also listen to the gas tank while the key gets turned. You should hear the fuel pump run.
To check spark, pull a spark plug out, put it back on the plug wire and rest the electrode end of the plug up against the engine or exhaust manifold and have someone turn the engine over. You should see the spark plug firing. Don't hold the plug or wire while doing this. You'll get zapped if it's working ok.
If these both check out ok, then take a look at your firing order. If it's off by a significant amount, it may not fire. I've seen this happen when a cap/rotor/wires were changed and the wire/rotor was not positioned on the correct cylinder. (Most of the time they will at least fire or backfire, but either not stay running or run REALLY badly if the firing order is off.
The cylinder is not getting fuel, spark or compression. You have already checked for spark on that cable and it appears to be good. Pull the spark plug and see if it is damaged. You can also switch spark plug and cable to another cylinder and see if the miss travels with the plug and or cable. If so, you'll know its the spark plug/cable that is bad.
You can check for fuel by listening to the fuel injector to see if it clicks. Use an automotive stethoscope or a long screwdriver--put the metal end of the screwdriver on the injector and the other end against your ear and listen to the injector while the engine is cranking or running. You should hear it click for each time it pulses fuel.
If both fuel and spark are good, then you are probably missing compression in that cylinder. You (or a mechanic) will need to pull all the spark plugs and do a engine compression test with a compression test/gage set. Lots of things can lead to poor or zero compression including: broken piston rings, burned/stuck/broken valves, cracked cylinder head or engine block, cracked pistons,etc.
Because one cylinder is "dead", the engine has to work extra hard to start and run against a cylinder that is dragging it down. If you find low/no compression in that cylinder, you will probably have to remove the cylinder head to correct it. A big expensive job. It may be cost effective to replace the whole engine with a rebuilt one.
