Question about 2004 Ford Freestar

Check engine light on

My check engine light has came on. It started after we put gas in it. I believe we got some gas with water in it. I have something it to dry the water up but I was also told to check the vaccum hoses. I have no manual so I was looking for a diagram.

Next time u fill up use chevron, you might be suprised to see the engine light go off. ive seen many cars check engine lights go on because of the quality of the gas.

Rather than to point out the obvious - you get what you pay for - let me try to help. Vehicles in the scrap yard may sit there anywhere from 1 to 12 months or more, depending upon how part-worthy they are. They get crushed when they are no longer worth the space they take up. Add to the fact that the vehicle may have sat at the owner's home for years before being sent to the yard, and you have no idea how old the gas is that you put in the tank of your Dodge. Fuel tanks will condensate over long periods of time, and there was probably a good bit of water in the gas you obtained. There could also be rust and dirt from inside the tanks as well. And certainly hope that the scrap yard did not mix diesel fuel with the gasoline (it happens!)... That said, the white smoke you mention is a giveaway of water in the combustion chamber. Normally, I would say use dry gas, fill the tank, and drive the water away, but this seems like much more than trace amounts of water. My recommendation would be to have a fuel sample taken from the fuel rail (about a quart) and checked for water. If there is substantial water (I as believe), then you will need to have the tank drained, the fuel filter replaced, and the injectors and fuel lines purged. And next time, pass on the free gas!

Fuel going to carb, fuel pump working, no prob with fuel filter, enginge cranks over, but backfireing, enginge doesnt start. Have put starter fluid in carb, makes worse. i beliveve i have fire on points,...

I believe this is a fuel injected engine, not a carburetor engine.

Having said that, given what you've already checked and believe to be OK, I'd take a look at timing if I were you.

Could be a timing chain has either loosened or broken, allowing camshaft to get out of time relative to crankshaft. This could cause the backfire you describe.

However, before you go that far....after putting in the new plugs are you positive you got the spark plug wires correctly located ? Crossed wires could also cause a backfire.

Good luck!

Check engine fuel light on has water in the fuel

To be on the cheap side will cost more than just draining your gas tank. **** IT OUT and analyze the gas. If you determine that it was good gas then put it back in the tank.

You can buy a **** hose (or 1/2 inch tubing) anywhere. Good Luck.
