There are two crankshaft sensors located at the edge of the harmonic balancer. That's the large wheel coming out of the engine, passenger side, the wheel that powers the serpentine belt. One sensor is the crankshaft position sensor and the other is... I forget... crankshaft angle sensor or something. I replaced both on my car. I don't know wich one is your problem. When you buy a sensor, get the one with the mounting bracket already attached. They had problems with the sensor getting damaged from being adjusted wrong. Having the bracket already attached gives you the right adjustment.

Remove the serpentine belt. (It has a tensioner wheel. When that is moved, the belt becomes loose and can be removed.) With an 18 mm wrench, turn the crankshaft until one of the openings in the metal fin is at the sensor, giving a space where the sensor can be removed. One sensor is reachable from the top, but it is real hard to see. The other is reachable from underneath. My guess is, the lower one is you problem only because my lower one failed twice and the upper one only once. Your son has to crawl underneath, unhook the wire from the sensor, and unbolt the sensor mounting bracket. Put the new one in. Keep your fingers crossed.

How hard is it to replace a crankshaft sensor on an 87 olds delta 88?

Fairly simple 1. Disconnect battery at ground post. 2. Jack up vehicle 3. Remove bolt(s) holding on sensor bracket.4. Install new sensor (available at most parts stores such as AutoZone. O'Reilly's etc.) 5. When reinstalling sensor on block may sure that the metal ring that goes in slot on sensor, and that it clears the sensor when engine is rotated by hand. (this ring causes the timing interrupt and has two or three slots in it.) Caution do not apply enought pressure on ring to distort it. 6. Insure that sensor is plugged into connector.
Reconnect battery ground, engine should start. Caution do not over thighten the sensor retaining bolt or sensor could crack.

It sounds like you either damaged the crankshaft position sensor or you left it unplugged.

Bucking engine

Check the fuel pressure, also change the fuel filter.check the crankshaft sensor,or replace. It sounds more like the tps sensor(throttle position sensor). It is mounted in line with the throttle axle,on the throttle horn.Of course .with out being there and checking I am just guessing. But map sensor or mass air flow sensor could also cause this.Have you checked the air filter? This will cause the problem,if it is stopped up restricting air flow to engine and mass air flow.,map sensor, and vacuums needed to run the car.If I can help, let me know.

1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88' car stalls out. Coil pack might need to be replaced

Check the spark on each plug wire with a calibrated spark tester. One can be bought at most parts stores. If two plug wires that are next to each other are bad then replace coil pack. There may also be a bad ignition module. Also check the crankshaft position sensor.
