Question about 2001 Ford Ranger Regular Cab

1 Answer

Rough Ride I really want to buy this truck, but it has such a rough ride. You can feel every dent in the road. So I told the guy if he changed the shocks. He said No because it was still good and the truck was not that old. He got new tires , changed the ball joints, and still the rough ride. What do you think is the problem? I'm just a women who knows nothing about trucks.

Was told i had a leak in my rear shock and yes it rides a bit rough is that the problem

Shocks/struts are key to keeping your ride in your vehicle as smooth as it can be with the bumps and dips in the road.

Is it plausible this is your problem? Yes.

Is this your problem? I don't know without looking at the vehicle itself.

But, if you notice your vehicle riding rough AND did not state this to the mechanic diagnosing your vehicle and they suggest replacement of the rear shocks, it doesn't seem someone is trying to pull the wool over your eyes in this situation.

How can i reduce the rough ride characteristic

If you want a smooth ride you probably don't go off-road much.If you have agressive truck or off-road tires you could possibly change tires ( nothing with a short sidewall) , shocks. Because it's a truck your suspension will be pretty stiff (firm), so unless you want to change/modify the springs you'll have to soften the ride with what's between your springs and the road.

I would check your tire pressure, if your running 60 psi it's going to be a bumpy ride, lower the air pressure to 35 psi and see if it makes a differance, does the truck move up and down when you jump on the bumpers or is it stiff ?

The front[or rear] sway bars have links in them that are rubber mounted,it sounds like one of the sway bar links is broken,or one of the sway bar bushings is missing.Find the sway bar and have a close look at the mounts to see if the problem lies here.

if it was me i would check the shock mount at the top to make sure they are in good shape and checkout the tires to make sure you do not have a bad one or two and also check the stabilizer bar to make the bushings are not bad
