Question about Ford Focus

2 Answers

I have a Ford Focus 1.6 Automtic (2003) and have occasional starting problems usually first start in the morning. All dashboard lights come on but the starter only clicks. It does not turn the engine over. After 6 or so attempts it catches and the car starts perfectly and usually runs and starts perfectly for the rest of the day. I'm worried that one cold morning it wont start at all! Garages don't seem to be able to help as it is an infrequent fault. Thanks, Mike

Focus either doesn't start 1st time OR it starts and then in less than a minute, idling drops and cuts out. When it starts again, the idling fluctuates. Have taken the car to the so called 'professional mechanics of Bayford' and the computer doesn't identify the problem. This occurred while the car was under warranty but the problem is still present. I think my only choice left is to sell but feel bad to give my problems to somebody else. Prefer to fix it - please help.

Replace the starter, your right ; Mike. It will leave you stranded soon. Also have the battery checked and clean the thermals.

only two things left to do
1.- Clean and tighten battery ports (+ , -)
2.- ask for someone to help you, while you are trying to start it someone else give a few hits to starter, if second step helps to start it then it is the starter, hope this helps good luck!

My 2003 ford focus started his morning but as soon as I removed my foot from the accelerator my car would die. This happened numerous times this morning.

Your idle control valve is either dirty or bad. You should be getting a check engine light on your dash.
The idle control valve is located on your throttle body.
If you have a check engine light on you will need to plug a OBD II reader in to retrieve the code.
Please let me know what you find.

the sensor Rarely goes out but the PCM should be controlling the lights. there is supossed to be a 30 second dely between canches. (this stops a passing car from turning your headlights off.)
Get the PCM checked.

Ford Focus occasional starting problems.

Hey there...

Although I'm questioning why it would be doing this mostly on cold mornings, I would suggest that you check your battery connections. 99 times out of 100, the reason that this happens is because one of the battery cables does not have a good connection (Many times it's the ground wire). If you check to make sure that the connections on both ends of both cables are tight, then try taking your vehicle to your local parts store to have them do a load test on your battery. It's possible that the c.c.a. (cold cranking amps) are no longer sufficient to start your car. After awhile, batteries tend to lose their charge due to age, how many times it has been discharged completely, and also frequent cold weather. I believe that this should solve things, but feel free to contact me to ask about any other possibilities that may be causing this, as I'll look into any other similar common issues on your particular make and model. Should be battery cables or battery itself, though. Hope this helps and have a great day!
