Question about 2003 Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible
Hello, I need to replace my thermostat on my beetle, but it seems a pain to get to the bolts. Do I really need to pull the alternator out to do this? Is it better to get at the bolts from the top or bottom?
Any input you can provide to do this would be much appreciated. It seems like such a simple replacement is going to be a huge headache.
I wouldn't reckon you would need to remove the alternator as I think the thermostat housing is located on the right hand side of the engine just above the gearbox , easy way to find it is trace back from the top radiator hose to the engine and you should find the thermostat housing

check the vehicle spped sensor on the transmission, if that does work, it may be the gear on the differential that has come apart. that gear is plastic and does break. if this is the case, there is a way to remove the differential and replace the plastic gear, not the transmission.

look under the hood toward the headlight there will be a lever. pull it up (some have a button thing that you push in while you pull up) after you lift the lever, pull the headlight out from the front.disconnect electrical connector. remove black back cover plate remove and install new bulbs( remember not to touch them). replace in reverse order. hardest part is putting it back it. make sure you align the rails and have lots of patience you will get it!
