How to replace thermostat on 2002 beetle 1.8T

Hello, I need to replace my thermostat on my beetle, but it seems a pain to get to the bolts. Do I really need to pull the alternator out to do this? Is it better to get at the bolts from the top or bottom?

Any input you can provide to do this would be much appreciated. It seems like such a simple replacement is going to be a huge headache.

Thanks!

Adding a reply for anyone who may still need the answer: You must disconnect and move the alternator aside at tbe least in order to reach the thermostat housing bolts. You do not have to remove the alternator entirely. The job is a hassle but more inconvenient than technical. Dealer quoted me $270 to do the same thing it took me an hour and a $12 thermostat to do.

I wouldn't reckon you would need to remove the alternator as I think the thermostat housing is located on the right hand side of the engine just above the gearbox , easy way to find it is trace back from the top radiator hose to the engine and you should find the thermostat housing

I posted that the thermostat was mounted on the right hand side of the engine , this information is wrong and the thermostat is under the throttle body and you do need to remove the radiator , go on to YouTube and type in in the search , VW 2.0 T thermostat removal and they are a couple of videos that will show you how to remove the thermostat , sorry for the wrong information ,

check the vehicle spped sensor on the transmission, if that does work, it may be the gear on the differential that has come apart. that gear is plastic and does break. if this is the case, there is a way to remove the differential and replace the plastic gear, not the transmission.

SOURCE: 2002 vw beetle headlight light bulb needs replacing

look under the hood toward the headlight there will be a lever. pull it up (some have a button thing that you push in while you pull up) after you lift the lever, pull the headlight out from the front.disconnect electrical connector. remove black back cover plate remove and install new bulbs( remember not to touch them). replace in reverse order. hardest part is putting it back it. make sure you align the rails and have lots of patience you will get it!

Bought THERMOSTAT DOESNT SEEM LIKE i CAN GET TO IT TO CAHNGE IT! COULD YOU TELL ME IF THEIRS A WAY TO CHANGE IT MYSELF OR HAVE TO USE A MECHANIC?

"Book time" for a 2002 Montana is 2.5 hours at skill level D to remove and replace the thermostat. You can of course replace it yourself.
  • Remove air cleaner & duct assembly
  • Drain coolant
  • Remove crossover exhaust pipe
  • Remove radiator hose
  • Remove thermostat housing bolts & clean threads
  • Remove thermostat housing and gasket
  • Remove old gasket completely.
  • Clean housing
  • Replace thermostat and install new gasket
  • Reverse disassembly instructions to reassemble.
  • Refill with 50/50 mixture of DEX-COOL or equivalent coolant and clean drinkable water.

How do i get to the thermostat on my 2002 saturn vue v6 3.0 ltr

First you will need to remove the intake plenum, then the lower intake.

Remove the hose from the thermostat inlet housing.

Remove the bolt that holds the extension housing to the head near the oil dipstick.

Carefully jack up the passenger side of the engine and remove the t-stat extension housing.

Remove the thermostat housing bolts and remove the housing.

These are a real pain in the captain s quarters!

Replace a water pump need help asap

Jaguar S TYPE 1999 2000 2001 2002 Service Repair Manual They only want 10 bucks for it and it would be easier! The only hope i could find was this posting... Youll need to remove the radiator cowl and the fan and viscous coupling; they all come off in order. Then you need to drain the coolant and take off the hoses going to the thermostat housing which sits on top of the water pump. Theres one bolt in particular right underneath the thermostat housing that almost impossible to access, takes forever. You'll find the bonnet gets in your way too as its forward tilting. Take it off if you can stand the pain. With the thermostat housing removed you can see the water pump; if youre lucky it will come apart easily but more likely youll struggle to get the pulley off and theres hardly any clearance to get at the retaining centre nut. Ignore the book and pull the whole assembly out in one go if you can, dont try to get the pulley off the pump, its a nightmare. Replace the thermostat while your in the pain zone anyway. Reassembly is a straight reversal. The whole thing is a pain in the *** and I'd pay not to do it again. Hope this helps.

Best of luck to ya!

Location of the thermostat

Hello there:
just behind the top of the radiator, a hose runs from left to right. This hose is also just below the air filter box and the battery box and therefore difficult to see. Just about at the right end of the air filter box the hose has a hard plastic T pipe that branches off in a downward direction. At the lower end of this you'll find the thermostat mounted on a triangular flange and held in place with 3 bolts. The output of this then transitions into about 4" length of hose again before transitioning to an matal pipe that is kind of J shaped. The lower 4" section of hose is held in place by two spring clips, these are a pain to get to by the way. I found it easiest to remove the hose from the thermostat with it still bolted in place, similarly I bolted the new thermostat in place before replacing the hose. This way you have something relatively solid to pull or push the hose against. With that said the J pipe is also a tight fit in the space so none of this is easy to get to, it doesn't help that there is some kind of sensor mounted on the engine just adjacent to the J pipe.

Brake light bulb replacement.

Remove panel in trunk (round one on each side) reach inside unscrew toggle bolt then remove the entire taillight assembly, may have to push from inside. When you have the taillight assembly out you will see where the bulb is on the back of the assembly, remove and replace with new bulb. Put taillight assembly back in, replace toggle bolt make sure it is tight and replace panel. It is a pain the first time but I have done this 3 or 4 times it gets easier.
